When the caching mode is set to "limited," there may be a speed drop issue after a period of playback

When the caching mode is set to “limited,” a playback issue may occur after a period of time where the server appears to have no speed (the video keeps loading, but the download rate remains at 0 KB/s). Exiting the current playback page and re-entering allows playback to resume normally, but the issue tends to reappear after some time. This can likely be ruled out as a server-side problem, as it does not occur under other caching modes. Typically, this issue arises after more than 20 minutes of playback (though it hasn’t been thoroughly tested, there have been similar reports from other users).

  • Lately, streaming videos seems to disconnect more easily. While watching, the speed suddenly drops to zero. But if I exit and immediately re-enter, the speed goes back to full and I can watch for a while again — then it happens again.

  • It seems like this started happening after I changed the cache setting in Infuse to “limited.”
  • Previously, when it was set to unlimited cache, there were no issues at all.

The issue I’m experiencing is basically the same as shown in the screenshot above. I’ve now changed the caching mode to “Auto,” and the problem hasn’t reappeared. However, sometimes I don’t finish watching a video, which ends up wasting my data — that’s why I initially chose the “Limited” caching mode. I hope the developers can look into this issue. Thank you very much!

If you are not experiencing a problem with the cache set to “Auto” then you should probably leave it set there.

The other settings for cache are there for different cloud servers that react negatively with more packets or smaller packets while streaming.

Where are you streaming from, a cloud service or a local network file storage like a NAS?

Again, if it’s working set to “Auto” then it’s probably best to leave it there unless you encounter lock out issues from a cloud service.

I’m using Plex behind a reverse proxy, whereas the user in the screenshot is on a public Emby server. I chose “Limited” caching purely to save bandwidth—for example, if I’m watching a 10 GB movie on my phone outdoors and stop after 20 minutes, more than 7 GB of cached data could be wasted.

Then you may want to consider setting the cache to “Memory Only” or “Legacy” which doesn’t use read ahead capabilities.

Yes, thank you very much for your suggestion. However, if possible, I still hope this issue can be fixed. :joy:

This is happening to me since a few updates back, using jellyfin and caching to Auto, the video goes OK for a while but in 30 minutes or so it stops and I have to exit and reenter for it to work again.

My server is a seedbox btw
