What happens when playing a BD file with TrueHD 7.1 on a 5.1 system?

I’m watching some BD files and realized I’ve been playing the default TrueHD 7.1 audio files but have a 5 speaker system (no sub). Does Infuse or my receiver downgrade or change the audio to 5.1 or 5 or should I be manually changing the audio file I watch to the Dolby Digital 5.1 for each movie?

The Apple TV has no way of know what speakers are plugged into your receiver so it would send 7.1 audio.

The receiver would then receive that 7.1 audio and adjust the output based on the actual speakers you have connected.

but of course, the AppleTV doesn’t support TrueHD at all, so it would be convert it to LPCM before it sends it to your receiver.

So should I leave it at TrueHD 7.1 or change to Dolby Digital 5.1? Would it be higher quality to play TrueHD 7.1?

I would leave the Apple TV option set to Auto instead of changing it to Dolby 5.1.

Hi, sorry if my response wasn’t clear. My Apple TV audio is already set to Auto. I’m talking about Infuse. When watching a BD file in Infuse, the audio track by default is set to TrueHD 7.1, but there are options to play Dolby Digital 5.1. Should I leave the audio track in Infuse to play TrueHD 7.1 even though I only have 5 speakers or should I change the audio track in Infuse to Dolby Digital 5.1?

LPCM is a lossless format, so you will be better off using TrueHD as the source.

You’ll only miss dolby atmos metadata by this conversion (TrueHD to LPCM), but you will still get uncompressed audio in up to 7.1 channels.

Dolby Digital is however a lossy format.
