upgrading to the latest UNtethered version (5.2)

Hi you pros out there, newbie question ahead:

Im running a pretty old 4.x on my ATV2.

Is there a way to upgrade to the latest UNtethered  (5.2 as far as I know) version ? (and then have it jailbroken)

I don’t want to go the latest version, as it still is only tethered.

Only if you already have shsh blobs for this release on your ATV2.    If you have ATV Flash installed and have been using its option to backup firmware signatures you may have these from when 5.2 was being signed.   If you do not then there is no upgrade option to an untethered jailbreak.

no, unfortunately i did not have  ATV Flash installed.

Just a jailbreak, XBMC which I deployed via putty (no ATV Flash needed).

Ok, so my only chance is to upgrade zu 5.3 right ?

  1. Don’t I have the same probem then  ? I mean: what’s the difference between upgrading to 5.2 or 5.3 (hence 5.3 also isn’t the latest)

  2. what does “tethered” jailbreak mean in detail ? What does the “boot procedure” look like, once the ATV is back in my living room ?

The differnece is that Apple is still signing the 5.3 release (even though it is not the latest), That means that SeasomAss can ask the Apple servers to generate the shsh signature for running 5.3 on your ATV2.

The tethered boot means that any time the ATV2 needs to boot after removing power or a hard reset the ATV2 needs to be connected to a PC/Mac via micro USB to allow the boot to complete. This means that you have to have the ATV2 near to where it is going tobe used when you carry out the tethered boot as you cannot remove power without needing the tethered boot again. Unlike the full jailbreak process, the tethered boot only takes seconds and leaves intact any nstalled apps and their settings.

Thx for that perfect erplanation.

Now I understand.
