Upgrade firmware to 5?

I have an AT2 running either 4.1 or 4.11, and have wish to get XBMC running on my ATV.  I would like to retain the ATV functionality, but will probably use my ATV solely for XBMC.

The 5 part process for the older IOS versions seems time consuming, http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=125412. I was not able to get the ATV to enter DFU mode, and would rather just upgrade for the simplified jailbrake process.  However, the lack of 5.0 support for XBMC 11 is bothersome.

Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks

Apple have just updated the ATV2 firmware to the 5.0.1 release.    At this time there is no news on whether the current SeasonPass can jailbreak this release (I would suspect not), or if Apple are still signing the 5.0 release.

I would strongly recommend not to try any upgrades until the situation is clarified.

I assume this means it’s safe to proceed?

It's a good habit to always backup your firmware signatures. This will ensure you retain the ability to downgrade to an older software version in the future, should the need ever arise.

Yes - as long as you use the new version of SeasonPass that has just been released.

However you still have to decide if you want move onto the 5.0.1 tethered jailbreak.

How do I find the software to JB the version of 4.4 9A334v (3140)?

[I’d like to upgrade to the latest untethered version, but unsure of the process to upgrade since the files are no longer signed.]

Do you already have the signatures (blobs) for 4.4.4 running on your ATV2?   If you don’t then you cannot install that version.

I’m currently running 4.4 9A334v, although i’d like to upgrade to 4.4.4 9A406a I do not have any of the required signatures.

For 4.4., don’t I just need the correct JB software (ie. Seas0nPass).

Unfortunately no!   You cannot go to any release that is not being signed by Apple unless you already have signatures for that exact release.

Hi Michael950,

In my opinion go straight to 5.0 (iOS 5.1 - 9B179b) - tethered.

It will be easier to jailbreak & you will have a Stress Free Weekend!

I have struggled for 2 weeks trying to stay on 4.4 (9A334v) but because apple stop signing signatures you going to get lots of errors.

I have just upgraded all 3 of my apple tv 2’s to 5.0 (iOS 5.1 - 9B179b) - tethered  and Everything is working just fine!

If you do update make sure you ssh the following to stop your device from updating to newewr firmware.

  1. the first is to prevent automatic updating. This will prevent the device from updating which will break your Jailbreak and mess up all of your hard work!
  • First SSH back into your ATV2 using the above steps.
  • Now run these commands (copy and past each one separately hitting enter after each):
cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.bak

echo "127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts

echo "127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts

 echo "127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net" >> /etc/hosts

All the Best!!!
