Two NAS (one with SSDs one with HDDs)?

Hi guys,

currently I have an Apple TV 4K and a NAS with some HDDs (3 x 16TB in RAID 5 = 32TB).

And I only use the folder view in Infuse, I prefer to not use the library view, because in folder view I can customize more.

So I have several favorites pinned to the mainpage (Anime, Sitcoms, Movies etc…).

I have a ton of movies or shows, which I want to keep on my NAS and also want to keep in Infuse.

However sometimes, especially when I open the favorites, it is a little bit slow, it takes some seconds until the posters come up.

Now I was thinking if it makes sense to purchase another (2-4 bay) NAS only with SSDs, to first increase the speed and second of course the power consumption will be less. On this SSD NAS I would store my regulary needed stuff like my comfort shows and new movies etc. whereas I store my old stuff which I want to keep but don’t watch in the near future on the HDD NAS and this HDD NAS will be turned off most of the time.

Now how would Infuse handle that? Would it delete the entries after a time? Would the posters etc. even be shown?

Has anybody made something similar to this?

Before you venture down that rabbit hole, I’d take a look at how you are accessing the existing NAS in Infuse. Faster SSD’s might not get you there if the bottleneck is downstream from them. How is your aTV connected to the NAS? Wireless, 2.4 or 5 gHz or ethernet (definitely faster)? Is the NAS connected via ethernet 1GB or USB? There are other questions here but not knowing your equipment and how they are setup, thought I’d start with the more obvious.

Ex) I’m running a QNAP NAS that is hooked directly to a 2.5GB switch. Two aTV-4s are ethernet connected to the same switch. Router also connected to that switch. The 3rd & 4th aTVs are wireless 5gHz. Movies on the NAS feed all of them without any delay being observed. NAS is set with a fixed ip address. Infuse access for all of them to the NAS is via SMB to that fixed address. NAS is running 5- 8TB Seagate HDDs in raid 5 config.

Everything is 1gbit Ethernet connection.

How is the NAS connected in the Infuse Share? What NAS is it?

If you’re loading folders with larger numbers of items you may consider disabling the Smart Folders feature. This will make the biggest difference with how quickly things load.

A Synology NAS with 3 x 16TB WD Red, which is connected via 1Gbit to the router, the ATV is also connected via Gigabit.

The shares is connected as an SMB share.

Just to be clear, the playback itself is very smooth, even when I watch my bigger files (80GB).

It just takes some seconds until my posters load etc, when I go into the shares.

Smart Folders is very useful and I want to keep this setting on.

But yes, I am loading folders with a large number of files, and this is kind of slow.

@james , does that mean that even with faster storage, without disabling this feature, loading the items won’t get faster?

Most likely yes.

In essence, Smart Folders adds library-type features to the folder view which requires some recursive scanning logic. If there are many items in the folder you are loading then this simply results in the page taking longer to load.

For clarity, when you mention posters, are you referring to the thumbnails for each movie or the posters presented with a movie is first selected? RE: if thumbnails, I believe once Infuse has populated all of them they are in cache and the next time you go into a folder they should automatically be there and not have to repopulate, i.e. I see no delay. BTW I’m also not using the Library mode. All movies are in a Movies folder and there are subfolders for specific types such as westerns, scifi, chic flix etc. These subs show at the top of the display and any movie not in a sub are displayed following. FYI under the advanced setting of the smb share, Auto Scan, Pre-Cache Details, Pre-Cache Artwork, and Smart Folders are all ‘On’.

Hi @james ,

as I don’t want to switch to library mode or diable Smart Folders, are there any more options that would help to improve the load speeds?

Not really. In essence, with Smart Folders on Infuse will do some recursive scanning to check and see whether it should present a folder as a playable item (single movie folder), a TV season (single folder with multiple episodes inside), or a normal folder (multiple non-TV show videos and/or other folders inside). This is normally pretty fast, but if you’re opening a folder with hundreds of items then it may take a moment before it can get through everything.

Disabling Smart Folders would simply treat all folders as normal folders, so this scanning does not need to happen.
