Hi guys, I have an ATV 2 with the latest Flash Black. I’ve been setting up the Media application, and I must say I’m VERY impressed.
I’ve added shared folders on my NAS for Movies, Kids Movies and TV Shows, Its found and categorised all my movies in both Moveis and Kids Movies on my NAS but I have a couple of small problems.
I added a “TV Shows” folder which the Library Settings page says contains “212 Movies, and 0 TV Shows”. I can’t see any of these TV Shows either as Movies or as TV Shows. The folder contains for example “True Blood” seasons 1 to 5, “Continuum” Season 1, “Fringe” Seasons 1 to 5 and some other stuff. How do I get the ATV to properly categorise these TV shows, or failing that where will they be as they don’t show up in Movies?
<EDIT> I have now found these in “Other” but would like to get them properly categorised in to TV Shows </EDIT>
One of my Movies is “G-Force.mp4”, kids film about hampsters, this is incorrectly identified as “Pride and Glory” which is a 2008 Adult Crime Movie. How can I amend this metadata so it correctly shows as G-Force?
Any help would be gratly appreciated, keep up the great work!
Navigate to the folder that holds your TV Shows and the press and hold the select button on the remote. A menu should then be displayed and change the content type from “Movies” (which is usually the default) to “TV Shows”
On the G-Force movie, press and hold the Select button and take the option to Reload Metadata; hopefully this will then present you with some possible matched; one of which is hopefully the name you actually want. If that doesn’t work I suggest removing the “”-" from the name and repeat the process.
Thanks for the quick reply, as soon as the kids have finished watching Cars 2 I’ll give it a whirl. Is it possible to edit the meta data manually? The reason I ask is that all the TV Series episodes in “Other” don’t have any covers / synopsis information. Previosuly Plex managed for identify these TV shows and pull up the info, but I was having issues with Plex on the NAS and prefer the fact that the Media Player in ATV Black uses AFP and nothing extra running on the NAS.
Also since noticed that I’m missing odd movies here and there from the Movie List. e.g. Cars 2 is there but Cars 1 is missing, and also a few others. I’d like to figure out how to get these to show up.
Right so I fixed the G-Force problem, however I have lots of TV shows and some Movies that simply show in Others with no Metadata. E.g.
Cloudy.With.A.Chance.Of.Meatballs.mp4 (would have thought this would be found easily)
Cars.Maters.Tall.Tales.mp4
As for the TV shows they are in structures like this …
/TV Shows/Fringe/Season 1/Fringe.S01E01.mp4
And
/TV Shows/Suits S02/Suits.S02E01.mp4
I’d guess it’s something to do with my naming convention, can someone suggest the best way for me to structure these so that they are correctly identified and placed in the TV shows category?
Can you confirm that you have correctly set the content type to “TV Shows” on the folder that contains your TV shows as described in my 1st reply post.
Well, don’t I look like a complete idiot now. I read your reply and was so excited I went off and changed the G-Force metadata, and then tried to do the same on the TV Shows (Completely ignoring what you said). I’ve now re-read your post and can see I mid-understood it. I’ve managed to locate the “Change Content Type” menu in the My Files section and have changed all the Sub Folder types to TV Show; guess what … its now found 200+ TV shows. :s
Though it would be much better if this Metadata Type was set at the “Share” level, as I have had to individually change the sub folder content type in my “TV Shows” share. Not a huge problem but means each time I add a new sub folder I’ll have to do this. Alternative is to nest it inside another folder where I can set it at the top. If I could set it on the Share its self that would be much better.
Thanks very much for your reply and apologies for not reading your original reply properly the first time. Now all I have to do is resolve my last few remaining Movie metadata issues and I’m sorted!
Right, thanks a million I now have 99.9% of my stuff categorised correctly. I have one Movie (or would it be classed as TV shows) that I can’t get out of the “Other” category …
Cars.Toons.Maters.Tall.Tales.[2009].mp4
I guess I’ll add the Cover Art and Metadata manually. Thanks for all your help, I can now enjoy my Apple TV!
I’ve got the Cover for Maters Tall Tales and also added an .xml for the metadata, however while the cover and metadata show up, its still categorised as “Other”. I followed the example on the link above to create the metadata but still no dice…

Is there a possibility to copy the Media player library setup file to another ATV2?
i have 2 ATV2 jailbroken, i was wondering if it is possible to copy the library setup file to another ATV2 as i am planning to orgnize my library and was wondering if there is a way to eliminate the same setup process twice!
I struggled with TV shows not showing up correctly in the Library (they would appear in Movies or Other) until I found this thread and concluded it would be impossible with the current Media Player options.
My system does not have all content mixed together in one share, I have separate network drives for TV and Movies (the family has been trained on this method and I don’t really want to change it). I cannot set the TV share’s default type to “TV Shows” at the share level, though - only each folder under TV shows (set Mad Men, Mythbusters, etc., folders separately as “TV Shows” content type). So I have to perform manual steps on every subfolder under the TV share to add them to the correct Library, and there is no way to categorize single shows/episodes/items not in a folder, and they will never show up properly in the Library.
I’m sure there are others with this setup, so I would like to request that FireCore add a “default content type” setting at the share level, then each of my shares would automatically be organized correctly.
I would much prefer an option at the share level too in order to dictate the type of content that share has in it. To get around this I have nested another folder inside my TV shows that I set the content type on…
/Multimedia
. . . . /TV Shows (share)
. . . . . . . . . /TV Shows (folder with content type set to TV)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . /TV stuff goes in here
Looks a bit cumbersome when browsing at the file level but the media player makes it look right on the ATV. Also means I can just drop folders of new TV shows in without having to go add the settings every time. I’d also like an option to re-scan the shares when you start the media player. The number of times I have to do this manually after adding new content is a pain!!!
The problem is almost 99% guaranteed to be with the way they are named. Give me some example file names that are not showing up properly. I have a very strict naming policy that works almost all the time.
