True HD Atmos as PCM Stereo instead of Multichannel

You are right this solves the problem but doesn’t explain the weird behavior in the first place. Some people might want/need to keep it on Auto and are stuck with this problem.

It’s not an infuse problem but rather an issue with how the TV handles audio it receives and forwards to eARC. Problem doesn’t exist if you go straight into a receiver or a soundbar with extra HDMI inputs.

It could also be an LG problem. I had issues with multichannel PCM and LG TVs in the past. You could set it to auto and then check via the HDMI diagnostic menu if the TV receives Stereo PCM or multichannel PCM from the ATV. I don’t know what it’s called in the English interface but it should be sth like ‘programs’ → ‘search programs’ you need to have this point highlighted and then press 1 on the remote for 5 times. The upcoming menu needs to be expanded in the HDMI section, I’m sure you’ll find what I mean.

LG OLEDs can’t transcode Dolby TrueHD audio, which is why the Digital Sound Output needs to be set to Passthrough, so it travels from the ATV to the soundbar untouched by the LG TV. Setting the Digital Audio Output on your LG to Passthrough allows your ATV to do all the work and send the file in an ‘as-is’ state to your soundbar.

For any future readers this is only supported on devices using eARC, not ARC.

ARC would have you connect your streaming device directly into your soundbar, but with eARC we can avoid this.

As to why it happens: There may be some “miscommunication” between the ATV & LG when set to Auto because the Infuse app is down-converting a Dolby TrueHD source to Multi-Channel PCM. This process may be “confusing” the tv in choosing how to transcode the codec, thus, defaulting to Stereo.

Hope this helps.

I have a few movies rips that have an Atmos 5.1 eAC3 track and a 7.1 eAC3 track.
I’m using Infuse on an Apple TV 4K. Samsung Frame 2024 and an Arc Ultra based setup.

When I choose the Atmos track everything works as intended. I see the logo in the SONOS app. But when I choose the 7.1 track, it gets « downgraded » to stereo PCM as shown in the app.

I’m wondering if it’s a bug? A configuration thing? An incompatibility? Anyw views?

Thanks!

I moved your post to a related thread which has more info on what may be happening, and some things you can try to resolve the issue.

Thanks James. I had a look at options, and tried various things, to no avail… The track in question is E-AC3 7.1, not True HD. I’ve tried rebooting the Apple TV and changing options on the TV, but it didn’t change, the track still outputs as Stereo PCM

I’ve never been able to get a 7.1 atmos track to work. I’ve read on other forums that the AppleTV dolbyMAT is limited to 8 channels so either 7.1 or 5.1.2. It’s possible your Sonos doesn’t support 7.1 PCM?

Side note I’ve never tested a 7.1 track that doesn’t have atmos on it.

I’m a little (or maybe more) confused…

I have an ATV4k connected to a Samsung Q80T, then eARC from there to a Sonos Arc Ultra. As my example, I’ll use Dune Part I. When I play this from the Apple TV app, the soundtrack appears as Dolby Atmos on the Sonos app. When I play a ripped UHD via Infuse, I get Stereo PCM. If I change the soundtrack to 5.1, the Sonos app changes to DD 5.1, and when I go back to 7.1, it stays at DD 5.1 I’ll post mediainfo below, I’m pretty sure I did it correctly. I’ve tried Auto and Passthrough on my TV, all the toggles that have been recommended, no real change.

So, on the face of it, I have the exact same problem everyone is talking about here. Then I read the Audio Options and Capabilities page, which says pretty clearly that Infuse decompresses the stream and sends LPCM, so your receiver will reflect that.

Am I missing something here? Is this just an issue of a red herring displayed in the app, or am I not getting Atmos? I would say it’s a problem if I’m not getting Atmos, but how can I really tell?

Please take a look on this above thread.

this thread is kind of a same issue that I reported on my thread few weeks ago. where on playing TRUE HD 7.1 Dolby Atmos/ DTS HD audio, the dialogues are coming out of all the front three speakers when playing 7.1 dolby atmos content.
Here’s my thread Link-

as stated by above user, the issue occurs on Dolby True HD Atmos 7.1 or DTS HD 7.1 because “Videos with Dolby True HD Atmos 7.1 audio are passed as Stereo PCM instead of Multichannel PCM.”

Please solve this issue. @james

also there is one user above who posted this on this thread above -

Bug: When launching a title (shared via SMB) that uses Dolby TrueHD Atmos / 7.1, normal behavior would have Infuse output the audio track in Multi-Channel LPCM, but instead what happens is Infuse down-mixes to Stereo instead.

Workaround: Files with multiple audio tracks have the advantage of the ability to change to an EAC-3 or AC3 audio track, changing the output to Multi-Channel LPCM. If I switch back to the Dolby TrueHD track the audio remains in Multi-Channel LPCM.

Caveat: If a file only contains a single audio track (Dolby TrueHD), there is no way to “repair” this Stereo bug, unless the user plays another file with multiple audio tracks, one must be Dolby TrueHD, with secondary AC3 or EAC-3 tracks to change to. After doing so, changing back to play the original file properly plays Dolby TrueHD in Multi-Channel LPCM.

If a user doesn’t have multiple audio tracks to flip to & fro, or another file to play with multiple tracks, they’re out of luck, and stuck with a Dolby TrueHD track playing only in Stereo, instead of Multi-Channel LPCM.
