What tvOS and what version of Infuse may help since it’d been over 7 months since the last post. Lots of updates since then.
tvOS 17.0 and Infuse Pro 7.6.1. So I think for both the newest.
I think I fixed my problem. Just want to mention my solution here just in case someone else find this thread via google.
I had to re setup the earc configuration over the Sonos Setup (Setting → System–> “my Arc” setup → TV-Setup) Afterward it was working with new sources. Somehow, sourced I added before this re setup were still playing in stereo. So I had to delete them and add them again. Very weird…
I am seeing the same issues recently. Since about a month or so. (Or never noticed before) Just updated to tvOS 17.3 and the problem still exists. Both PCM 2.0 and Dolby Digital work fine, but switching from PCM 2.0 to Dolby TrueHD with Atmos makes it play (or rather keeps it) as Stereo 2.0. (As if the audio track isn’t really switched). Why I suspect the tracked isn’t really switched is because when switching from Dolby Digital to TrueHD it remains Dolby Digital. My setup is Sonos Arc, Apple TV 4K, LG CX and Infuse 7.6.6. I also made a diagnostics with code 7YGFB.
Edit:
Did some more research and it really only happens for TrueHD files that have Atmos. I tested with a TrueHD file without Atmos and it does not have the same issue. Also as someone mentioned before, switching off Atmos in the ATV settings also solves the problem but that is just as a workaround of course . Shouldn’t Infuse just decode the TrueHD to LPCM and discard the Atmos metadata? It seems Infuse does switch tracks (tested this with different language tracks), but the number of channels get messed up. Really weird.
No one else seeing this behavior? I can reproduce this behavior every time on 2 different Apple TV’s with any sources that have TrueHD Atmos. Even on the latest version of Infuse. When playing TrueHD Atmos it plays Stereo. When I disable Atmos in the ATV settings it works correctly. My setup is Sonos Arc + LG CX/C1 with audio set to Auto (I don’t want it on Passthrough for different reasons).
A post was merged into an existing topic: Stereo PCM issue
I have the same issue described here, except that turning off my Apple TV’s Atmos option does not solve the issue. The movie I am trying to play used to work perfectly about two months ago. Something has changed, either in Plex or Infuse.
Some videos will have multiple audio tracks, so you may double-check to ensure a surround track is being selected during playback. This can be done by swiping down while a video is playing and navigating to the Audio tab.
Also, the Apple TV has a system bug where it can get stuck in a certain audio output mode even if a different audio type is being played. This issue affects all apps, including Infuse. To workaround this you may try restarting the device.
I’d also ensure you’re running the latest tvOS 17.4 and Infuse 7.7.1 versions.
FWIW, I am able to get multichannel 7.1 output in Infuse with both traditional AVR and Sonos Arc setups - with or without the Atmos option enabled.
Hi James,
Thank you for your reply. I made sure I selected the right track. If I select True HD
, the Sonos app shows a stereo 2.0
label. If I switch to 5.1
, I will see the correct label on Sonos. However, when choosing the True HD
audio track back, Sonos shows a 5.1 label. This is a bug on the Apple TV (getting stuck in a particular audio output mode).
I tried restarting the Apple TV, the TV, and the Plex server, but it did not work. I am running tvOS 17.4 and the latest version of Infuse with the Pro annual subscription. Interestingly, I used to get the right Dolby ATMOS label on my Sonos app before tvOS 17.4 with the same movie.
If this gets resolved or I find other relevant information, I’ll update you here.
PS. Information about my audio system: I have a Sonos Arc with a subwoofer and two plays: 1.
One thing to keep in mind is you will not be able to get Atmos output when playing TrueHD tracks. Playing these will always appear as Multichannel PCM. This is a limitation of the Apple TV itself, and not something we are able to workaround in Infuse. We remain optimistic that Apple will allow more flexibility here in the future.
You can however get Atmos output when playing Dolby E-AC3 tracks, and you can download these 2 samples from Dolby to test.
Hi James, the only time this problem occurs for me is when I have my LG CX or C1 set to Audio Out = Auto. It does not occur with passthrough. I know this might seem a problem with the Tv but when turning off Atmos in the ATV the problem is solved. So it does seem to have something to do with the Apple TV or Infuse.
Thanks for providing the two samples. Using sample 2, I could see the Dolby ATMOS label on the SONOS app. The movie I am trying to watch has an audio track with TrueHD 7.1. I wonder, in that specific case, which type of label should I see on my SONOS app?
Thanks.
For that you should see ‘Multichannel PCM 7.1’ (like the screenshot I posted above).
IMHO, the best settings are posted here.
TV’s settings:
- Sound Out: HDMI ARC
- HDMI Input Audio Format: Bitstream
- Digital Sound Out: Pass Through
- eARC: On
- Auto Device Detection: On
- Simplink (CEC): On
- Auto Power Sync: either ‘off’ or ‘on’ (depends if you want TV/devices to all power off together).
Connect the Arc to the TV’s HDMI-2 ARC/eARC port.
Thank you. I got it. I will research the best settings for a Sony X900H in the forums.
I have an update. I went through the settings of my X900H and found that the eARC setting was set to Off. I turned that On without using any passthrough option. The Apple TV still sent the incorrect audio label for the movie I mentioned before to the Sonos app. After I rebooted the ATV, things worked as expected. Note that in my case letting the Atmos setting enabled on the Apple TV did not change the outcome–the audio label is always sent correctly now.
Seems a combination between TV and ATV. I changed my Samsung S95B from “Passthrough” to “Auto” and the 7.1 TrueHD Atmos track started playing as PCM 5.1. Prior to that it would only do 2.0. DTS-HD MA always outputs as PCM 5.1 regardless of TV setting.
So just play around and you will find an automagic setting.
I agree. This is the way.
I found a funky bug (with a workaround) with this update relating to files containing Dolby TrueHD Atmos / 7.1 audio tracks.
Bug: When launching a title (shared via SMB) that uses Dolby TrueHD Atmos / 7.1, normal behavior would have Infuse output the audio track in Multi-Channel LPCM, but instead what happens is Infuse down-mixes to Stereo instead.
Workaround: Files with multiple audio tracks have the advantage of the ability to change to an EAC-3 or AC3 audio track, changing the output to Multi-Channel LPCM. If I switch back to the Dolby TrueHD track the audio remains in Multi-Channel LPCM.
Caveat: If a file only contains a single audio track (Dolby TrueHD), there is no way to “repair” this Stereo bug, unless the user plays another file with multiple audio tracks, one must be Dolby TrueHD, with secondary AC3 or EAC-3 tracks to change to. After doing so, changing back to play the original file properly plays Dolby TrueHD in Multi-Channel LPCM.
If a user doesn’t have multiple audio tracks to flip to & fro, or another file to play with multiple tracks, they’re out of luck, and stuck with a Dolby TrueHD track playing only in Stereo, instead of Multi-Channel LPCM.
- AppleTV 4K (A2843): tvOS 17.4
- Infuse v7.7.3
- LG C1 65 (Input Audio Format: Bitstream, Digital Sound Output: Auto, eARC Support: Enabled)
- Samsung Q930B to eARC
Digital Sound Output should be set to Passthrough.
Fixed it, thanks.
Reason I had it set to Auto all this time was because when I had my Xbox Series X, Passthrough would result in no audio after switching Inputs.
Since I no longer game, this is a non-issue now.
Thanks, again.
