Trouble setting up streaming from Mac to Apple TV

I’m new to Infuse and came here on recommendation. I have previously used Plex and had no problem getting set up - but here I am all at sea.

Can someone please point me in a tutorial to set up the Infuse app on my Mac to work with my 3rd generation Apple tv (in which I have already installed the Infuse application). Such setting up suggestions as appear on the opening page of the firecore website seem to be outdated and when I try to follow it the screen and instructions don’t tally with what I am seeing.

I have an external SSD which holds all of the media that I want to stream, but there are no instructions to tell me what to do and in what order. Do I do anything in my Mac preferences first, or do I do anything in thr Infuse desktop app first, or maybe the Infuse app on my apple tv.

I do hope someone somewhere has done a step by step guide for numpties.

Thanks

Graham

Welcome to the forum!

There’s a users guide that covers most items here.

If you run across specific questions please feel free to ask here. :+1:

Thanks - I did mention in my post that I found the “guide” confusing and of no help to me. If that’s all that’s available I’ll work on another idea. I appreciate your reply.

As I said, I’ve got my files on an external SSD connected to my Mac. I used the “local folder” option and navigated to the folders of Home videos; Movies and TV shows that I want to use and this seems to have gone OK.

My TV shows are grouped in Seasons and this also appears as expected, however there are some TV shows that I have grouped called Billy Connolly don’t appear in the TV Shows folder at all, but in the Movies folder.

My movies which I have collected in folders ie The Bourne series, Mission Impossible series etc. come appear OK : “The Bourne Collection” and “Mission Impossible Collection”, but others don’t. I have a number of films in a folder I call John Grisham Books, and another I called Olympus but these are not grouped together at all. Also there are a number of films not in my collection that are there, as well as several that should be in TV shows as I said above.

Can anyone suggest the best way to sort this out please?

Thanks

Best bet it to check those items at themoviedb.com. Some items may not exist, some might be considered part of a show instead of movies or visa versa.

Ok - thanks for that. I guess the “unasked for” movies must fall into the same category? What a weird system. I’ll need to see if I can untangle my own stuff somehow.

I am still struggling here. Just when I seem to have made some progress I’m unable to get anything to appear in my apple tv.

I think it must be the approach I have taken. I have tried and succeeded to add my media files using “local folder” - but although I can see and play files on my mac - it doesn’t work on apple tv as I cannot connect to my mac.

This, I think is where I’m going wrong

This screen ask for a username and a password. Can someone please tell me which username and password is expected.

Thanks

On your Mac did you try setting up an account with username and password under smb settings?

You use the password you use to login to your Mac.

A solution to an earlier question didn’t work for me at all “One other thing to check is ‘Share files and folders using SMB’ and ‘Windows File Sharing’ are both enabled. These options can be found by clicking the Options button in System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing.”

I tried all that and nada. It’s asking for a password. So far this software is a virtual paperweight :sob:

Thanks for the advice. I tried that too, but no luck. I’ve tried multiple combinations of user name and passwords. Sadly I have now given up; removed the app and moved on.

There are a few things to check.

  1. SMB is enabled on your Mac (more info here Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support)
  2. At least one user is selected under ‘Windows File Sharing’ (as shown under ‘Advanced Options’ in the link above)
  3. The folders/drives you wish to share are added to the list of Shared Folders
  4. Selected username and password are being entered in Infuse

Note: iCloud username/password cannot be used. If you’re using an iCloud ID to log in to your Mac, you will need to set up a new ‘Sharing Only’ user as described here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Also, if you’ve recently installed an update for macOS, you may need to disable and then re-enable File Sharing to get it working again.

Nope. No work. :frowning: Tried all 6 steps, the numbered and creating a new user and check/uncheck/check again. None of it is working unfortunately. When I log into a new user I cannot access the files I’d like to stream on my Apple TV.

Also, if this were to work, would I have to sign into a different account than my iCloud on my Mac? At that point I should just cast it to the TV

Found a solution; downloaded Plex and set up was a breeze. Thank you for your time

I thought I would revisit infuse and try to sort myself out. For some strange reason everything came together and this time and I’m very happy with what I’ve got set up. I use the Plex media server (which I had just about given up on as every time I tried to access it via my Apple tv one of my video categories was showing No Content). Infuse works flawlessly for me now and I find that the hair I tore out earlier is growing back nicely.

Glad I came back and gave it a go!
