Transfer using USB cable when connecting to Mac/PC without iTunes

Is it possible to ransfer media from a PC/Mac without using the iTunes documents or syncing options? If I have understood correctly I can only use this when I connects to the iTunes library where the ipad/iphone is synced to. Am I right?

The wifi transfer is good, but when I want to transfer a lot of media in a short time to multiple ipads for a roadtrip it takes a loong time.

Yes, you can use an app like 'iFunBox' to transfer files back and forth over USB, without using iTunes.

Connect the device via USB, then navigate to:

User Applications --> Infuse --> Documents

Unfortunately with iOS 8.3+ this is not possible without jailbreak since they blocked direct access to any application.

iTunes can be used to transfer media to any trusted device - it doesn’t necessarily need to be syncing with that device.
