Transcoding premium formats without Pro subscription

Transcoding has been a game changer for me, and my wife and kids. It’s working really well for us!

I’m interested to know how it would work without Infuse Pro though.

If I install the free version of Infuse on my mother-in-law’s AppleTV, connect her to my Jellyfin server, choose a transcode setting in the main Infuse menu, and then she tries to play a file with one of the video or audio formats that requires a Pro subscription (e.g. DTS-HD), will Infuse refuse to play in on principle, or will it happily request a transcode to a different format and play that?

I’m very happy to keep supporting Infuse with my subscription and being able to direct play my 4K Dolby Vision remuxes, but not sure I’ll be able to get her signed up for Pro. So I want to understand how this will work for her before going down the route of replacing her SwiftFin app.

Any input from James, or a user with Jellyfin and the free version of Infuse, would be appreciated!

Yeah, everyone in my household has Infuse Pro through family sharing :slight_smile: I’m talking about my mother-in-law who doesn’t live with us.

You can use the transcoding settings to direct Infuse to play a lower quality video which may not require a Pro upgrade (depending on the transcoding level you choose).

Of course, playing the original video in its full quality may still require Pro, depending on the video and audio type.
