TMDb API now has a new “year” query that returns the movies matching the primary release year. I think this should resolve many issues with regular “year” query that returns movies that have any sort of release.
primary_release_year=year
For instance, Miracle on 34th St (1947) shows up as the first item when searching year=1994 because there was a Venezuela release that year.
