Temporary 2x speed on Apple TV (like iOS has)

Ever since I discovered I can temporarily play at 2x speed on my iPad by simply holding down on the screen, it’s my absolute favorite feature – perfect for speeding up boring parts but still catching the things that get said.

Now I want to use it on my Apple TV! Unfortunately, the 2x speed is only selectable from the Video menu, which requires many clicks to navigate to and turn on, and then many more clicks to navigate to and turn off.

It’s been confirmed that the temporary 2x features does not exist on Apple TV: 2x temp playback speed is not working on old Apple TV

So this is a feature request for a similar “press-and-hold” 2x speed. I don’t know how much flexibility the app has in responding to remote events, but the intuitive equivalent to me would be simply holding down the middle button of the clickpad – or, if possible, even better might be just resting the finger on the touch-sensitive clickpad? The same way you currently just rest your finger anywhere on the screen for iOS.

Really, the temporary 2x speed is just a godsend for lectures, reality TV, crazy long suspense scenes that go on forever in horror… so bringing that to Apple TV would be amazing.

This is now available in Infuse 8.3.2. Simply hold down the Select button to enable temporary 2x playback speed.

Love the 2x feature. It would be nice if all the OSD (except the «2X» label) would fade away though.

@james Hi James – this is amazing! I’ve been using this the past couple of days and it’s SO GREAT – it’s letting me speed up through the boring bits, and even better is that it’s maintaining the spatial audio on my AirPods (for some reason, selecting a permanent speed different from 1x reduces the audio to either regular stereo or mono, not sure which).

I will echo @respl though that it is a little weird that so many controls stay visible on the screen. I realize that’s probably because those are all the playback controls that appear whenever you touch the select button. And it actually can be a bit annoying because the media progress bar can wind up covering up subtitles.

Obviously one fix would be to hide all the controls but “2x” whenever you enter 2x mode.

But an alternative could be to trigger this by holding down the Play button on the Apple remote, instead of the Select button? Because when I’m holding down Select for a long time, I actually realize the Play button would be more comfortable to hold, since it’s the natural resting position of my thumb. I hate to ask to change a feature after you’ve implemented it, but if switching 2x from the select button to the play button would “kill two birds with one stone” – make it more ergonomic, and you wouldn’t have to write any extra code to suppress the controls that automatically appear when touching the select button – maybe it would be better after all?

But in any case, just having the feature to begin with, in its current state, has already made it SO MUCH BETTER. Thanks a ton James!

+1 to both comments above. I suggested the same improvement, along with another to reduce discomfort, in the 8.3.2 announcement thread:
