Support Dolby Vision P7 automatic conversion to P8

I’m guessing it might be one or both of these items

  1. current licensing does not support it
  2. the current Apple TV is not powerful enough to do the live transcoding needed to combine the dual tracks

So I would wait until this fall when we get a new Apple TV. I am definitely interested in this as more and more 4K movies use DV with FEL. MEL I can convert so no problem

In my understanding, this does not require encoding, just ignore the EL layer during reading.

You can do that for MEL but not all FEL as some of the enhancement layer is needed to correctly represent the image

In fact, in China, some players have already added support for converting from P7 to P8.1, and this feature is currently under testing, with its effectiveness yet to be known. However, I believe that the conversion does not use transcoding.

for have an accurate image in first time, add p7 MEL convert to p 8.1 on fly would be a very nice feature !

Please infuse team, for remux lovers like us, check if this kind of feature is possible (P7 MEL to P8.1 on fly) :folded_hands::folded_hands::folded_hands:

Convertion is also possible with not complex FEL p7.

Definitely an interesting feature. For those who believe HDR fallback looks bad, we can have a toggle

Good idea !!!

Hello,

I’m posting this to help explain to the community why this feature feels important to me. It could be a real game changer for Infuse, which has already pushed Dolby Vision support remarkably far by fully leveraging the Apple TV 4K video pipeline. With that in mind, why not go one step further?

Today, when a Dolby Vision Profile 7 file, especially the kind commonly found in UHD Blu-ray remuxes, cannot be played in Dolby Vision, playback simply falls back to HDR. An automatic conversion to Profile 8, when possible, could help preserve the benefits of Dolby Vision in more cases.
This feature would offer several advantages:
• It would preserve Dolby Vision output for more compatible files, especially P7 MEL titles or some less complex P7 FEL ones.
• It would improve compatibility with many UHD Blu-ray remuxes encoded in Dolby Vision Profile 7.
• It would save users from having to manually convert their files beforehand.
• It would provide a better plug-and-play experience, especially for users with high-quality local media libraries.
It would make Apple TV 4K even more appealing for Dolby Vision playback through Infuse.

Thank you for considering this possibility. It could bring real value to many users.
