That would be the way to flag it … but (unless I’m mistaken) to display any subtitles flagged as “default” you still need to manually turn on subtitles. Only the “forced” flag makes subtitles appear when subtitles are otherwise turned off.
The primary use case here is when a predominantly (say, English language) film includes scenes of dialog in a foreign or alien (as in, space alien) language, eschews hard-coded subs for these parts to accommodate using the same video file for users watching in an alternative primary language (where translating an alien tongue to English wouldn’t be of any use to a viewer who doesn’t read English).
This is my issue. Infuse behavior should be that of the native Plex and JellyFin players.
This seems to function now with the Forced Only selected in the settings.
Ideally, this should be triggered by the app language settings to always pick the dubbed audio depending on the language selected. This is an edge case for me but solving the first part (foreign lang, Eng subs) could also be applied here.
Either way, seems like though this is still an open request?
I’m not aware how Plex or Jellyfin work — but I understand they provide more UI customization options than Infuse. My comment was specifically with regard to the different intended purposes of the “default” and “forced” flags:
Only the latter in intended to be shown to viewers who don’t generally require subtitles.
There are no flags which say “force display this subtitle — ONLY — if I’m in a different language than the default-flagged audio track”
It has to be implemented at the Player preferences level. Infuse would need to build that logic in, and then give viewers the option to enable its use via a new item in the settings menu.
We’re talking about the same thing, I believe. Plex and Jellyfin both look at the video file itself and the flags within it to decide how to display audio/subtitles.
That’s correct. There’s not way to do this in the video file itself. This is what the player/infuse needs to determine how to play the video depending on the file flags and the settings in the app itself.
The idea here and sorry if it’s been posed before.
smart subtitles for people that watch movies in foreign languages.
I would like a preference for audio language as in having multiple, I would select preferred audio language in Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English so it would play the file in that language before it would select the last one, priority list.
then smart subtitles would only enable subtitles (your choice of language) let’s say English if the audio is in a foreign language.
this is a feature within Emby and it’s really great to have, if I’m watching in English no subtitles are enabled but in foreign languages subtitles are automatically enabled with English preset.
8 years in now and not only has there been zero progress on this request, but something has happened recently and subtitle handling has gotten WORSE! I’m not getting forced subtitles turned on when in the past, they would be, and sometimes “full” ones on when none should be on. I hadn’t touched my subtitle settings in a very long time, but nothing was standing out until I reviewed my first post here. The option for “Forced-only” is gone. Just “Auto”.
EDIT: I am slightly mistaken here. The “Forced-only” option was in a different section of the settings and was on correctly for me. That said, there is still a problem with these actually being selected properly right now.
Doing another check in on this to see if it’s been picked up (sadly not) and to say this is still a feature that would be a huge benefit to me and is still extremely relevant to my daily use cases.
