hi, would it be possible to have a setting where subtitles are only on when the default language is different to the default audio you have set?

I just went to go watch All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) tonight and was reminded that this feature still isn’t in Infuse.
I’m really hoping a fully automatic subtitle feature can be added with the following logic:
- Play audio following the container’s Default flag
- If two identical subtitles exist, then always pick the Image-based (PGS) subtitle over the Text-based (SRT) subtitle, even if the Image-based subtitle is second in order.
- If Audio is local language of playback device then look for a Subtitle track with a Forced flag, and don’t turn on Subtitles if a Forced subtitle track doesn’t exist.
- If Audio is a foreign language of playback device, then select a non-SDH Subtitle track matching the local language of the playback device. If a non-SDH track isn’t available, then select an SDH track in the local language of the playback device.
- If Audio is changed to the local language, then repeat searching for a subtitle track according to Step 2.
- If Audio is changed to a foreign language, then repeat searching for a subtitle track according to Step 3.
The Plex app shockingly handles this well aside from the SDH vs. non-SDH part (which is important for Subtitles vs Dubtitles handling).

This sounds great to me, I’d like a couple of tweakable options myself like favouring SSA subtitles over others (mostly for anime) but otherwise very similar use case here. Also being able to select additional languages to not display subtitles on at all for bilingual folks would be nice.
Incredible. 5 years now and still no progress on what should be a basic feature.
I can get behind this zombie suggestion.
“Forced” should only be the preferred track for users who turn subtitles off; since forced subs only include text translations of foreign or alien languages the director would burn-in to the movie in theaters.
I know a lot of folks only prefer the regular (stripped) subs (not needing to be told there’s thunder or the sounds of crickets and slamming doors).
I prefer the full SDH subs because, among other things, they often name the person who’s speaking, or the artist who’s singing the soundtrack music; which are nice bonuses for me. And sometimes you’ll get insight to the editing process when a line from the script gets cut from the film but not the subtitle track. 
Yeah, no, thank you. I almost always find image based subtitles entirely too large and distracting and therefore always make sure I have text-based subtitles available which are easily scaled and styled. 
(I also prefer SDH subs).
I don’t think this part needs to distract from the rest of what I recommended. There could be a simple option in Infuse to “Prefer Image-based Subtitles” or “Auto”. Auto could simply just do everything I recommended, but just pick the ideal subtitle based on the order it is in and would meet your preference (and probably should be the default).

Yeah this would be my ideal behaviour as well, especially for certain media like anime where PGS or SSA is basically required because they overlay info on signs or do other effects to match what the source material does.

Would be nice to get some attention to this one next time there’s capacity now that the important dolby vision, direct mode etc etc stuff has all been rolled out.
I’d really like to be able to do what speedy suggested above - currently every time I start a new anime series (which is often, as they tend to be 12 episodes long) or a foreign language film I have to go in, pause and pick the correct subtitle track for English. Otherwise I’ll end up with subtitles on for all my english language content which I do not desire.

I would like the option to have subtitles ONLY come on when Immplaying back something that isn’t in English, and stay off when I am (or default to forced only)

Indeed a great feature I would want too, I do not need subtitles on English or my mother tongue, I would need subtitles on any other langs.
