Strange filenames when using SMB (not UPnP)

When I use SMB some files have strange filenames (OKBLOB~3) etc. But when using UPnP, they have the correct filename. Thus I’d use UPnP, but it doesn’t support the Library feature.

Any suggestions for the strange filename issue?

Cheers

Welcome to the forum!

This can happen with SMB shares if you are using certain special characters in your filenames.

These characters include: / ? < > \ : * | "

A bit more info can be found here.

Oh of course, that makes sense. Thanks for your reply  I’ll look into renaming them ??

Just to update on the fix that worked for me on Synology Diskstation, so the instructions only apply there:

The fix for me (on Synology) was to edit /etc/samba/smb.conf to add the mangled names=no, and then restart the Samba client using sudo /sbin/restart smbd
