Sort issues, .nfo/TMDB and <sorttitle>

Can someone verify whether Infuse uses from a .nfo file or not?

I am attempting to migrate over to Infuse (8.0.5) from MRMC which has been abandonware for a long time. I’m using the latest gen AppleTV 4K, SMB direct play from a homeserver. I have everything set up but have some titles that I’m trying to get sorted correctly and it’s really frustrating. I DO NOT want to use collections and want to display individual posters for all movies, even movies that are duplicated with a theatrical release, directors cut, etc.

It appears that some of my movies are populating correctly according to the existing data and others are not. For example, I’ll use James Bond movies. Using MRMC and previously KODI, always worked. Here is what I’m seeing:

This movie shows up in Movies, prior to “A” titles following the “007” sort title:
Movie file - 007 #20 Die Another Day (2002).mkv
from the .nfo:
title - Die Another Day
original title - Die Another Day
sorttitle - 007 2002

This movie does not populate correctly:
Notes: This movie refuses to display how I want it, regardless of what I do

  1. If I identify this move using the TMDB metadata, it shows the movie name as “Casino Royale” and puts it in order with “C” movies and does not use the “Title” or “Sorttitle”
  2. If I identify this movie using the .nfo as the meta data, it puts the movie in “Library\Other” and shows the title as the movie file name "007 #21 Casino Royale - Uncut (2006)

007 #21 Casino Royale - Uncut (2006).mkv
from the .nfo:
title - Casino Royale 4K
originaltitle - Casino Royale
sorttitle - 007 2006

The first 20 007 movies sorted correctly, #'s 21 through 25 do not. I also have many other similar examples. Most work but the ones that do not follow the same patter as Casino Royale. If I use the TMDB info, it puts them where I don’t want them, if I use their .nfo, Infuse puts them with the “Other” movies.

Any Ideas? One thing I liked about KODI and MRMC (I think you can do it in Emby too) is that you have the ability enter a sort title right in the app and it adds it too your .nfo file which, the apps then use properly. I wish Infuse would add something like this…

Can you upload one of the problematic NFO files we can take a look at?

Here is a sample NFO which includes examples of the fields supported by Infuse.

James, I’ve been playing with this for the last couple of days and right now, I’m not 100% sure that the issue is with Infuse. I just found that when I did the new install of Win 11, some (not all) of the files on my NAS (weirdly just .mkv and .nfo files) have some type of odd permissions issue that I belivee is keeping data from them being passed via SMB over the network to Infuse. I thought I had it fixed earlier when I corrected a bunch of the permissions issues that I’ve discovered so far. I was playing with the file name settings in Infuse and it did fix some but not all of the sorting issues. When I played with the settings some more, Infuse reverted back to some (again, not all) of the titles being out of order. No matter what I’ve done so far, I can’t get them to go back like they temporarily were. I’m going to work on it some more and if I can’t get it, I’ll send you the files. Note: as far as I can see, the .nfo files title, original and sorttitle entries are all good. Thanks.

James, I’ve narrowed it down a little on my end and verified it’s not a permissions issue as I thought. One thing I’ve noticed and am wondering if this is normal behavior: If I edit a movies metadata and select the files .nfo, when you go back in to edit/check the metadata again, the option for internal file metadata is check marked. Normal?

I’m burned out, will send a couple .nfo’s tomorrow. Thanks

Generally, if you are wanting to use NFO files for movies that are present on TMDB there aren’t any manual steps you need to do, other than to place the NFO file next to the video (ensuring the names match).

This will allow Infuse to match the video to the TMDB title while using the data present in the NFO override what it gets from TMDB. This still allows you to get artwork from TMDB but use your own metadata.

Also, if you are just looking to use NFO files for sorting you may consider simply switching the sorting option in Infuse from ‘Title’ to ‘Filename’. If it gets you the results you want it may be a simpler approach compared to creating a bunch of NFO files.

James, I have pinned it down and it was/is not a permissions issue on my end. First off, does or does not Infuse use the “sorttitle” tag from .nfo files to sort movies and the “title” tag (not the “originaltitle”)for the displayed name if the .nfo is selected under “Edit Metadata”? That may answer the question once and for all.

Here is what I found (Note: I do not want to use collections):

  1. If I choose sort by filename, Infuse is indeed sorting the movies by their filename. I do not want to sort by filename for a couple reasons, and I’ll use the Fast and Furious movies for example as those movies do not follow a set naming convention. For example 2 Fast 2 Furious. If I use sort by filename, that movie is placed near the beginning of the movies list, away from the other Fast & Furious movies. I really don’t want to have to rename 300 or 400 movies file names (out of 3,000 or so) so as to get the sort order correct. With Kodi, Plex and MRMC, I used the sorttitle tag to group the movies together. Fast 1, Fast 2, Fast 3, etc. and the title tag to make the display name what I wanted; e.g. 2 Fast 2 Furious 4K.
  2. If I choose sort by title, it again is basically doing the same thing and grouping movies either out of order or separating movies that should be group together.
  3. If Infuse is supposed to use the sorttitle tag (and title tag) when selecting the .nfo file under a respective files edit metadata tab, then it is currently broken. Currently, when you select the movies .nfo file option, exit go back into edit metadata, the “None - Use imbedded metadata” selection is check marked. I can conform that Infuse is then 100% for-sure using the movie files embedded metadata at that time and displaying that data as the movies title and, Infuse will usually remove the movie from “Movies” and place the movie in Library/Other.

Thanks for your time, Jeff

James,

Please mark and consider this issue closed.

The error was on my systems end. When I upgraded from Win 10 to Win 11, something with SMB or network shares got corrupted. I did a full Win 11 re-install and now Infuse is having no issues reading the .nfo files and sorting the movies correctly via the sortitle tag.

If I did have one suggestion for Infuse on the sorting issue, it would be really nice if Infuse had a “sort title” feature built in instead of having to go and manually edit the nfo’s sorttitle tag on the PC/NAS they are on.

I apologize for the confusion and time taken. Thanks.
