Some subtitles broken (iOS/tvOS 18 + macOS 15 beta)

Now Chinese char will show like ⎕⎕⎕⎕⎕⎕⎕⎕ ⎕⎕⎕⎕⎕ (blocks).

Chinese ASS was working fine b4 update to tvOS beta 18.

SRT got no issue. Only on ASS.

Maybe Apple change some SDK functions?

We’ve had a few reports of this, and it seems to be a bug in the iOS/tvOS 18 betas that affects subtitles which contain certain embedded fonts.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe there is a way to move back to tvOS 17 after installing a tvOS 18 beta.

It appears Apple has fixed this issue on tvOS, but the problem remains on other platforms - even in the RC builds released this week.

We are looking into options for resolving and/or working around this issue.

No problem on my Mac. Both ASS SRT Chinese char working fine.

We’re submitting 7.8.3 with a fix for this issue to Apple today. :raised_hands:

If you’d like to try it early you can join the special TestFlight group using the link below.

Note: Apple is currently reviewing the builds so there may be a short delay before they appear in TestFlight.

Not sure if 7.8.3 will fix the issue or not, the issue has been there a while for ASS subtitles, and the worst part is, the performance and playback is terrible on my device, I am using ipad pro 12.9 third gen, with excatly same kinds of 4k video files, infuse used tgo be sleek before, but now it’s very slow, click on pause and resume, or change subtitle will take few seconds to response, sometime I choose to select subtitle, the image has stopped, but audio is still playing.

I didn’t reported since I suspect it’s still relate to this subtitle issue, so let’s see if it can change things or not.

BTW, I used emby ios player on same device recently, and it has no issue on ass subtitles even it’s ios 18 beta, and also the playback performance is smooth, so I don’t think it’s a device performance issue, ipad pro 12.9 third gen is old but I think it’s still enough for playback

When the issue appears it can result in missing subtitle characters as well as playback performance issues if/when affected subtitles are enabled.

7.8.3 is currently in review at Apple and should be available soon. :crossed_fingers:

It was fine at tvOS 17.

Would you be able to send in a sample video file you are seeing this issue with?

It was normal when 7.8.2 on my Macbook.
After update to 7.8.3, ASS broken back again…

Somehow I can’t upload screenshot here. Keep saying error.
Here’s Dropbox link.

I’ve already uploaded an MKV file and an ASS subtitle file for you to review.

Additionally, I would like to mention that when playing the video with the problematic subtitle file, the player becomes very laggy, and sometimes the screen goes black. The Apple TV remote also becomes unresponsive.
