SMB activity when AppleTV is on 'Standby'

Hi,

I’m using aTV Flash to mount my Synology CS-407 to stream CD and DVD information.

Whenever I have my shares mounted (using NitoTV), my NAS keeps spinning down and up its disks. I have tried to debug this using Synology’s built-in tools, and see the following (in /var/log/messages on the CubeStation):

Jan 8 16:53:38 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:54:35 kernel: opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:55:39 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:56:39 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:57:09 kernel: opened by pid 1973 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:57:35 kernel: opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:58:39 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 16:59:39 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 17:00:35 kernel: opened by pid 1976 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 17:01:39 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1973 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 17:02:39 kernel: [.] opened by pid 1973 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]
Jan 8 17:03:09 kernel: opened by pid 1973 [u:(/usr/syno/sbin/smbd), comm:(smbd)]

When I unmount the shares, the disks spin down after the specified time period and the CubeStation’s status changes to ‘not active’.

I did not have the shares mounted on another computer at that time.

I do know that ‘Standby’ is not really stand-by on AppleTV (I can still SSH into it…), but I guess that there shouldn’t be any SMB activity going on all the time?

I there anything I can do to further debug this situation? I can run a packet sniffer on my main machine to try to capture network traffic (I think… not all traffic goes via the wired network at the moment).

Thanks in advance for any hints/tips/questions.
