Slow speeds when streaming from Synology NAS

Infuse speed test shows an average of 70-80mbps when connected to my Synology NAS and because of this, I face a lot of buffering issues with 4k remux files. This is the case with both my Apple TV 4K connected via WiFi.

The Apple TV itself is able to pull in excess of 200mbps through my access point when I do a Ookla speedtest, so the WiFi isn’t an issue. I’m able to copy paste files from my Mac to the Synology with speeds in excess of 400-500mbps, so the NAS isn’t an issue either.

What could be causing this issue?

Can you try a temporary test using Ethernet instead of WiFi?

Also, if you’re using SMB you can try switching from Auto to SMB 2 or Legacy and see if that helps.

Currently on an ATV4K 2nd gen I’m seeing 300+Mbps using SMB on Auto on the Infuse speed test so it’s very possible.

Usually there’s a gremlin in the WiFi connections that can add to the problems.

Installed Infuse on my MacBook and it’s the exact same issue. WiFi LAN speed seems to max out at around 100mbps and it’s the same kind of buffering as on the Apple TV when playing 4k remux files. Using IINA or VLC on the same Mac, playing the same file pushes WiFi LAN speeds to 150mbps with no buffering.

How do I change the SMB version? Is this something I need to do on my NAS?

That’s not necessarily a true statement. What speeds are you expecting for Speedtest? If you are expecting 200 and get 200, your Wifi might have a theoretical maximum of 1G but it is dropping 4 out of 5 packets.

The NAS is connected to WiFi or Ethernet?

What I’m trying to say is that if Infuse is somehow being limited to 80-90mbps, it’s not my WiFi that’s the issue here because on an internet speed test, the Apple TV can pull 200mbps. The WiFi is NOT the issue here.

NAS is connected via gigabit LAN. I changed SMB settings on my Synology to SMB2 with large MTU and that seems to have increased the Infuse speed test to around 115-120mbps from 80mbps before. Changing SMB settings within Infuse makes no difference. I also tried an NFS share and I’m getting the same 115-120mbps speeds.
