Saving Media on ATV for offline viewing

Is there a way to save / download / upload media to Infuse for offline viewing? VLC allows you to turn on its web server to upload media via a computer, it looks like the iPhone / iPad version may too, but I can not find a way to do this on the AppleTV version. I want to save some media on my AppleTV so I can bring it to a place where there is no internet, but I cannot find a way to do this. I purchased the pro version because the description says you can “Download videos from networked devices”, but when I connect via SMB I don’t see an option to do this, any help is greatly appreciated.

O

My understanding is that on tvOS an app has very limited ‘permanent’ space to store files … generally to store configuration type information. Otherwise the app has to put the files in the ‘temporary’ file area, which tvOS can delete at anytime if it decides it needs the space.

iOS on the other hand does not this restriction and apps can use as much ‘permanent’ space as available.

For this reason the download feature is only available in the iOS version of Infuse.

Unfortunately, storing files locally on Apple TV is something Apple recommends avoiding, and as a result is not available in Infuse at this time. Sorry.

Hello,

There are other products out there which do support this. VLC does for example (although it doesn’t support Dolby Digital) and at least one other product which is no longer available in the AppStore. Being able to download media is an advertised feature of the AppleTV version of Infuse, I’m a little disappointed that it is not available. I understand TVOS supposedly cleans up this temporary data when it feels it needs to be cleaned up, I would be fine with that to be able to store limited media on the device for offline viewing. The problem is I need a way to display video presentations without internet access, and I was trying to avoid using a Laptop or any other non-media device.

Where do you see that “Being able to download media is an advertised feature of the AppleTV version of Infuse”?

Do you have an iPhone or iPad? If so you probably could AirPlay to an ATV.

Also, did you notice the warning in VLC where they discuss media stored locally on your Apple TV?

“Note that contents can be removed by the operating system without prior notice anytime VLC is not running in case your device runs out of storage.”

So you could easily lose any content you were counting on.

I quoted it above, but if you go into the AppStore on the Apple TV and read the description of Infuse 5, under EXTRAS it says “Download videos from networked devices”. It’s really pretty clear as an advertised feature.

I also stated above I am fine with the AppleTV clearing up temporary data as in the disclaimer in VLC. I’ve never seen the Apple TV actually clear any yet as I have had media in there for over a year which never disappeared, but VLC won’t work for me here because it doesn’t support Dolby Digital. AirPlay usually has poorer quality then directly playing a video, thus that obviously really isn’t an option.

I agree with you that statement is in the description in the App Store and should have be marked as iOS only.

But many people have if you read any of the threads about Infuse’s metadata being cleared on some people’s ATV and having to be redownloaded … for some on a regular basis; but this probably depends on app usage, so some never see it while others see it frequently.
