Hi. I regularly start something on the Apple TV app then move to the phone and back to the TV after ten or so minutes. Do I need to press the refresh button on the front page every time and wait for it to finish before being able to pick up from the last play position on the next device?

Generally no, as the updates will happen automatically…and often times in the background when the app is closed.
However, if you don’t see them syncing over immediately it doesn’t hurt to hit the refresh button.
