Proper 50p/60p deinterlacing of content

I sympathise. Most of my SD 50i content has been converted via Handbrake to 50p, but I’ve quite a lot of HD 50i that I want to keep native so I simply avoid Infuse, I use VLC player on my macbook and a choice of several Kodi boxes for TV playback. I am curious as to why the absence of bob/yadifx2 doesn’t get more discussion on here, I guess majority are viewing content that is either encoded as progressive, or is progressive at source but frame interlaced in the encoding (in effect still progressive). In the meantime, natively interlaced content remains unwatchable with Infuse.

I suspect it’s because anyone under the age of 30 probably doesn’t even know what interlacing is or encounter any material that has it. They watch YouTube and TikTok, they generate content with iPhones, they don’t know what a DVD is, they don’t know what broadcast TV is, and they don’t know what a camcorder is :man_shrugging:

And so Infuse doesn’t probably care, because the cohort that does know what interlacing is and has interlaced material is a shrinking one. Even though this would not be difficult for Infuse to fix…

I have found the bwdif filter to be extraordinarily good. It seems to be able to pick out static on-screen graphics and preserve its full resolution from the interlaced lines (no shimmering) and yet preserve the full motion of the interlaced background. The stunningly smooth motion that results is incredible to my eyes.

Also, bwdif does not restore vertical resolution of the fields by simply duplicating lines. It uses image resampling (bicubic or lanzcos) to re-create the vertical resolution. Just like if you took the vertically squished image in Photoshop and resampled it only in the vertical direction. You would really struggle to tell that’s what has happened.

So I simply cannot watch interlaced material on Infuse any more until I have bwdif’d it.

And with ffmpeg, it’s easy(ish) to control the quality of the re-encoded output. I cannot see with my naked eye any reduction in quality compared to watching the interlaced content directly on a system that supports it. So I no longer feel I am losing anything and no longer need to watch the ‘native’ source any more.

Is this well and truly planned? Or just “planned” as in, “we don’t want people making more threads for something we don’t care about”? It’s been 4 years since a fix has been available. There’s no reason to not be able to support proper deinterlacing. You would think that an app that advertises itself as being used for digitizing your own media and playing it would… yknow, actually prioritize making sure it plays properly!

There is so much content on DVD that was shot on video in either 60i or 50i, and Infuse just makes a choppy mess out of them in its current state, not to mention how it completely mangles mixed film and interlaced content. If they implemented the yadif2x deinterlacer, I would buy a lifetime subscription in a heartbeat. It really is the one thing it’s missing, and I’m baffled it’s taken so long, just years of waiting when a fix has been at the ready for 4 years.

Well the last time a staff member from FireCore engaged on this topic (@james) was in January 2021. Despite prompting from other posts since then to re-engage on this topic.

So draw your own conclusions…

Bumping this, I’m also having to switch to a different device just to watch interlaced content :frowning:

Its been six years since the first post but the deinterlacing on Infuse is still lacklustre. I always switch to Kodi on my PC for interlaced content. I paid for Lifetime a long time ago and while the unlimited upgrades are much appreciated, the lack of features compared to free playback software on Windows is very disappointing.

There are pros and cons to the Apple ecosystem but it’s situations like these that make me sympathize with the haters. Whenever they do decide to implement this feature I hope it’s a proper solution for those of us with a large variety of legacy DVD content. Considering how long this is taking, I hope Infuse is able to handle mixed film and interlaced content in addition to proper 50i/60i deinterlacing. I would be crushed to see another half-baked solution after all this time.

The only reason we are so pushy is because a fix has been available for Apple devices for years now, but the creators of Infuse refuse to make the quick and easy fix. With all the stupid AI updates and Dolby Vision revisions being added it’s very clear to me that Infuse is nothing more than a piracy app to the developers. They all just download pirated streaming shows or movies which are either 24p OR poorly deinterlaced already so no one actually notices nor cares for true legacy content or actual properly ripped from physical media content. Kodi is just the better solution at the moment, as klunky as it can be at times but it’s not available for the Apple TV so it sucks having to switch devices. May as well just play the DVDs as is at that point…

I get so hopeful every time there is a new post here.

I appreciate the work being done to regularly upgrade Infuse, but it would be nice if the developer could spend an hour and update ffmpeg. It clearly works fine on Apple hardware since MrMC has had proper 2x deinterlacing support since its initial release back in 2016.

While I did buy MrMC for my AppleTV to play interlaced content I don’t really like the interface. I ended up just running Kodi on a separate android device for all interlaced content.

I purchased lifetime for Infuse a while back, but it is disappointing that it is geared only at playing progressive video and ignores the decades and decades of countless hours of interlaced material – why have a media player that cannot properly play legacy content? That seems like the highest priority of any work that could be done on the application.

If there is some sort of roadblock to simply updating the video decoder that we don’t know about, it would be nice if the developer could explain the challenges as it appears to be a relatively simple upgrade to those of us looking from the outside.

Adding proper deinterlacing would actually get me to upgrade Infuse - I am still running 7.8.3 since there hasn’t been a single upgrade since then that appealed to me.

I get hopeful too and it’s always just another person asking why it’s not available yet. I just wish they would be honest and remove this from suggested as it’s so clear they do not care about it, despite the fact it would obviously bring in many new subscribers and lifetimers. If this app was open source I would’ve just done the fix myself at this point but Apple devs in particular seem allergic to the concept.

FYI, the metal deinterlacer that Channels developed will produce significantly better picture quality than the MrMC/Kodi BOB doubler. It runs a full YADIF2x motion adaptive algorithm on the GPU using Metal.

Plex is also working to integrate this work into their new experience player:

Bumping/adding to this. VT yadif2x in ffmpeg works really well, would be nice to add.

I’ll add, you CAN install Kodi on AppleTV (not easily but possible) and it does deinterlace, but it only offers Bob and “deinterlace” (algo not specified), Bob doesn’t seem to work (at least not on some content) and the plain Jane “deinterlace” doesn’t bump framerate (yadif 1x?). I’m separately going to champion adding the vt_yadif to Kodi but aTV is almost a complete afterthought for them.

It’s funny you mention this, as if popularity of posts determine whether you add a feature, when topics with far fewer likes than this have been implemented almost immediately. Just admit you can’t be bothered with it instead of hiding behind this excuse.

FWIW, @NC_Bullseye isn’t a Firecore employee, they’re just trying to help

Just bumping this one in case there’s any updates - since this has been in the planned state for quite a while now. I’m sure that many of us in thread will be happy to help through testing/providing test content

Version 8.4.2 has added Bwdif deinterlacing. I won’t be able to try this out with my content until later tonight, but interested to hear how it works for others. Has it been configured to output double the framerate (1 frame per field)?

Had a quick check just now, and unfortunately I don’t think it’s been configured correctly for 50/60i content, so still the same issue as before :frowning:

So what exactly is the point in it being there? What advantage does it offer over the other deinterlacers?

This I’m not sure, it’s supposedly higher quality deinterlacing but I’m not seeing any huge differences to warrant its inclusion… seems like an odd thing to add in
