Problem with manual metadata update

hello,
i use infuse with two Apple tv 4K, one in the bedroom, another in the living room, and my movies are on a personal server.

some movies are not found with the infuse search. I identified that they are stored in the ‘others’ folder (in French) on the infuse tv interface, which contains all the videos not automatically sorted by infuse because they do not have metadata. We can then search for them manually, with the movie poster, and that’s cool.

but once the metadata is modified, we can find the movie on the Apple tv where we did it, but not on the second Apple tv which will nevertheless look for the movies on the same server (even after having done settings > library > update metadata, on the second Apple tv).

i don’t understand. Isn’t the metadata changed directly in the movie file on the server when you manually edit it? Shouldn’t the second Apple TV automatically categorize the video and find it when searching, once the metadata is updated in the second Apple TV?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

No, sorry the change is stored in the Infuse data on the device and on it’s iCloud sync of manual metadata corrections.

Make sure that both ATVs have the same Default User and that both are signed into the same Apple account.

thank you very much @NC_Bullseye for this answer, I understand better now. I will look into it more closely since I do not use the icloud functionality at the moment.

question: is it technically possible, with proper programming, that manually modified metadata can be saved with the video file on the source device (a personal server in my case)?

if yes, would this be an acceptable suggestion for improving infuse for a more intuitive and direct use?

thank you very much for your opinion.

Not currently but with a little tweaking with the file name you can make it where Infuse finds the correct movie or show.

If you have one in particular that is in others you can post the file name here and we’ll see what we can recommend to get what you want without the need to correct it.

thanks @NC_Bullseye

actually, I have a very large number of movies and series episodes that are in “others” without metadata, probably because I have quite a few old movies and series.

I think this is the case for many collectors who use infuse.

I would like the updated metadata to be saved with the video files on my server, but it’s a huge amount of work to do this outside of infuse. Infuse has a great feature to find the movie or serie poster and update all the video metadata simply by clicking on it. The only thing missing is the feature to directly update the source file with the updated metadata. But I don’t know if it’s technically possible…

Well, with a little cleaning up of the file titles the solution will be with the file so you wouldn’t have to do it again. Just be aware that any videos that you do use infuse to find the correct match with an “edit metadata” will be lost if the device clears the memory pool. Then it’s back to doing the corrections again. Best to use the iCloud feature that backs up those.

As to old series and movies, that’s where many of my videos fall. Things like “The Prisoner” from the 60s and movies like The Wizard of Oz from 1925 and with the right file names they are found by Infuse perfectly.

Best of luck and if you end up wanting to get things corrected let us know.

This users guide should get you pointed in the right direction for the majority of problems.

hello @NC_Bullseye

your advice to rename the files so that infuse finds the metadata puzzles me. My movies and series for which infuse does not find the metadata are generally well named.

Here is a typical example: for the serie ‘Hannibal’ , all the files are named the same way (see below), and infuse recognizes perfectly the episodes of season 1, but not the rest.

same thing for the serie ‘Little House on the Prairie’, some episodes are recognized correctly but many episodes are in “others” although all the files are named the same way.

I looked at the icloud option, but the big problem for me is the following: I have many friends who have subscribed to infuse to access the videos on my server from their homes with the WebDAV protocol. If I use the iCloud service to have the metadata updated on my two Apple TVs, my friends will not have access to the updated metadata since they will not have the same iCloud ID.

one more reason, it seems to me, that the ideal solution is to update the metadata directly in the source files.

tell me what you think please?

I think I see the problem, try changing the names of season two and three to Hannibal 2013 instead of 2014 and 2015. Infuse looks at the file name year to be the start of the series, not the season.

I believe this is because there are some series have the same name but are started in different years and sometimes different countries.

As to storing things like corrections, metadata, configurations etc on a local NAS there is a suggestion thread

running requesting this feature and you can add your support for this request by clicking the like button in the first post of that thread.

The only solution currently available would be to adjust the names to match the metadata source as discussed earlier. If the file name matches without having to correct it would do it on all devices.

You really will want to make sure that iCloud sync is enabled to cover your devices.

thanks @NC_Bullseye for your help!

when i saw “moderator” under your name, i thought you were part of the Firecore employees, but looking at your profile i realized that it was not the case.

so a special thanks for your involvement in my issue!

i liked the running thread on the subject, and i will make my own suggestion. Thanks!

Just trying to keep newer users from having to fight the same demons I did throughout the years and versions of Infuse. :person_fencing:

Once folks get used to how Infuse works and what it’s looking for in file name and structure it makes maintenance of your database easy and it just works. :+1:

Did the year change in the filename fix the problem with Hannibal?

hi @NC_Bullseye
i haven’t tested it yet.

thanks @NC_Bullseye for moving my thread to the main thread, it may seem silly but I’m not used to how forums like this work yet.

the first question on the subject is over 6 years old!

it’s not very reassuring about the resolution of the problem, do you have any idea why Infuse hasn’t implemented this feature after so many requests?

and above all, how can I be informed when this feature will be implemented? (sorry for these questions which show how new I am on forums like this)

hello @NC_Bullseye
best wishes for the new year!
you didn’t reply to my last message above, that’s normal it was December 31st…

Not really, if I had to guess I’d say that implementing the feature over multiple operating systems would be part of it not to mention the vast number of different NAS manufacturers and all of the interconnected issues makes this a pretty major feature.

You can watch that thread and note tags on it.

And you can see what’s currently on the roadmap for upcoming releases here.
