Playback issues with HEVC on ATV4

I wanted to watch a part of a course I am following on my Apple TV and when I started it the video hung, audio simply went on. I pause, move the progress cursor up and down and see the thumbnail update. I decide to play again somewhere and… Black image, I do hear sound. Interesting. So I go to my computer, fire up Infuse, play the same file, no problem. Hmmm.

VLC on computer: no problem.

I download Infuse 7 from the App Store so no beta version, and video hang. Download VLC from the App Store, and run the file… Also a hang.

So, video handling on Apple TV is different than the computer?

Also, is it possible to have both Infuse The Beta and Infuse The AppStore on the Apple TV? Installing them overwrit the other one. Makes it hard to A <> B problems.

My Apple TV is a HD one, not the 4K. And my computer is running Monterey., Both are running the latest OS versions applicable to them.

I can get upload the file to you for playing around with it, but I do need the dropbox address. I don’t remember that. In fact I’m not even sure it is dropbox…

P.S. I do see some weird artifacts at the start of the file (the problem starts basically within the first 5 seconds), but still Monterey has no probems (apart from the artifact at the start), and Apple TV decides to keep the video frozen.

It may help to run it through mediainfo and post the results here.

Thanks for that! Maybe @james will be able to look at this and see if there’s any obvious gotchas.

The ATV4 has limited support for HEVC, and these need to be decoded using the less-efficient SW decoding method.

The newer ATV4K models include HW decoding support for HEVC, which will probably fix most issues related to HEVC playback you are seeing.

Ah! Ok… A reason to get the new one, lol

Thanks for the clarification
