I noticed something else: this is not a pure Dolby Vision problem. Even with HDR10 it stutters on this Apple TV generation.

This is related to a known issue with the 1st gen Apple TV 4K model, and iâve moved your posts to the other existing thread.
This issue affects some 1080p HDR and DoVi material, as it seems this specific device struggles to upscale certain videos from 1080p to 4K. Playing these videos with 1080p output should work fine.
We have a few ideas we plan to experiment with to see if we can improve this, but for now you can follow this thread for updates.
As a temporary solution, you can disable upscaling for this type of files until the problem is resolved. So it will be possible to watch such files without stuttering.
Yes, this can be done by setting the Apple TV to output to 1080p instead of 4K.
I have also those stuttering issues on my first gen Apple TV 4K when I play 1080p Dolby Vision x265 content (Netflix WebDL) and I can confirm that when I (temporary) set the general Apple TV output to 1080p (instead of 4K) I donât have any problems.
I am also part of the stutter club. 1080hdr content that does not stutter when 1st gen atv is set to 1080 output.

I have upgraded to the latest apple tv and still having the same issue. Have checked the speed test on a few movies and they are about 930Mbps average speed. It doest seem to matter if they are mp4 or mkv or 1080p or 4k. Are we closer to a fix or am I missing something?
It also doesnât matter if I change the video format on the apple tv from 4k HDR to 4k SDR, 1080p HDR or 1080p SDR
This sounds like another issue. This one is already identified and specifically for the 2017 ATV and 1080p HDR files.
Every 1080p HDR movie or TV show i have stutters on AppleTV 4k 1st gen. Unfortunately they all are Netflix animation that are not available in 4K.
Hello, as of 12/07/23 this is still an issue for the 1st Gen AppleTV 4k. It is specifically with 1080p HDR files that have subtitles on. I am using the latest version of Infuse. Some things Iâve noticed:
-Disabling subtitles completely removes the stuttering. Unfortunately this isnât an option when watching something in a foreign language
-Changing anything in the main Infuse settings does not improve the stuttering at all
-As the file plays the stuttering slowly start to improve, but pausing or restarting makes it stutter again.
-Altering any settings in the âSubtitlesâ tab while playing a file also improves the stuttering. For example changing from âsmallâ subtitle size to âsmallerâ, color settings, etc.
-Switching to a different subtitle track and the back to the preferred track also sometimes improves the stuttering.
-Any other format that is NOT 1080p HDR plays perfectly fine. A 70Mbit 4K HDR file with subtitles is smooth while a 5Mbit 1080p HDR file barely plays
Unfortunately I doubt this issue will be fixed but I wanted to share my experience in case it helps anyone.
It seems like the best temporary solution is to wait for it to stop stuttering, alter any Subtitle setting during playback, and pray for the best. Very disappointed as the main reason I payed for an Infuse subscription is because Plexâs playback is so bad. I never imagined Iâd experience the same thing with Infuse. Safe to say I will not be renewing for another year come January.
I have the same issue with subtitles on even with non 1080p HDR files. Version 6 does not stutter so this is not an apple device issue. Yey no fix was ever provided. Not the âbuttery smoothâ promise that I paid for.
Any updates here, @james? Iâve got the same issue with basically every 1080p HDR10 or DV file I ever try, subtitles on or off doesnât matter. The stutter is massive. Switching to 4K variants, playback is buttery smooth. ATV4K 1st Gen, hardwired GbE network playing from a Plex server.

I have a HDR HEVC coded season and when playing on my AppleTV 4K (1st Gen) via Jellyfin sometimes the playback is stuttering. On macOS in Infuse or any other player it is playing like expected. I have seen the same behavior on different files, but this time I want to open a case.

Let me join this group. I have come across this issue recently. My 1st gen apple TV have this stuttering issue when playing the file shotting from my iPhone 14 Pro (1080p with DV 8.4, dvhe. 08.05. ), It is true that changing the general setting on ATV to 1080p can solve this. But, I believe we should have the permanent fix for this.
What I also discovered is that the TV itself (Philips PUS8505) starts to lag. When I open the input menu or anything else that overlays the video, the TVâs animations lag extremely.
If I install Plex and play the video with the Plex player, there is no lag. Interestingly, I always get a -200ms delay and have to correct it in Infuse. I always thought this was a problem with my TV and Sonos, but the problem was with the Plex player not persistent.
But I like Infuse more 
Just had the issue myself. 1080p HDR DV is unplayable on ATV 1st Gen.
I was playing around in the playback settings and as soon as I turned Dolby Vision off and back on, the playback went smooth.
Does this help the Infuse team somehow?
