Oversaturation issue on Mac

Hello,

I notice an oversaturation issue when playing 10-bit SDR videos using Infuse on mac. It seems like they are mistakenly played in HDR format, but this doesn’t happen when i play the same videos with my iphone or ipad.

Some details from mediainfo:

What type of display are you using?

I use an external HDR display. My mac doesn’t have a built-in display.

8-bit SDR videos look good on infuse. Is this issue related to infuse or the hdr settings of external screens?

You may want to provide a make and model so any other users of the same monitor can add any hints they’ve found while using it.

Sorry for the late reply!

I’m using the LG 27GR95UM and FFALCON U8, both connected via DP 1.4. The issue appears on both monitors, and it’s clear even in the screenshot(left: IINA, right: Infuse)

I use a Pro Display XDR and switch between the HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) Preset and the HDTV Video (BT.709-BT.1886) Preset depending on if I am watching HDR or SDR content. I also have HDR colors set to Apple in the Infuse settings. I believe this offers the best color representation, but I’m not an expert.

I’ve also observed that the internal display my MacBook also has a different representation of colors than the external screen. When the internal display is set to Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) Preset and the Pro Display XDR is set to Pro Display XDR (P3-1600 nits) Preset, the colors are represented differently when displaying the same SDR content on both displays.

I’ve also looked into how color is represented in different media players on Mac a while ago, trying out the 5-10 most popular players including IINA, mplayer, VLC , MKplayer, Optimus Player, etc, and found that they each have different representations of colors. I believe this comes down to the different color mapping settings or the approach to rendering that each of the players are using.

I believe the best path to getting correct color would be to make sure the color mode of your monitor matches the color mode of the content, but would be interested to hear James’ take on this issue. I found a review of the LG 27GR95UM and it looks like it supports changing the color mode on the monitor. It also may be beneficial to try seeing if switching the HDR Colors mode between Infuse and Apple in the Infuse setting helps achieve a better representation of the colors.
