Option to use alternate episode order

I got tired of waiting for this fix, so I just cancelled my subscription. I’m going back to my previous solution of running Kodi (on different hardware) instead.

This definitely feels like a much-needed and highly desired feature that’s missing.

As a fellow anime fan that’s had to mess around a lot to get Infuse to recognise my collection of shows, we either need the option to override the show’s metadata locally or refer to TMDB’s ‘Episode Group’ section and choose from one of those.

Seeing how users can edit TMDB and create their own ‘episode group’, it would enable plenty of people to either choose a structure they prefer or create the one they want and have it be accessible for others to use.

Hopefully this is something the Infuse team will eventually incorporate.

I feel this.

Generally it’s a good approach to focus on what the “majority” want to see in terms of feature updates, the issue is it’s usually superficial stuff like “new homepage layouts” or which side of the screen the show or film’s description sits - meanwhile long-term users (that likely paid for the lifetime sub) are waiting years for their cartoon or anime collections to be organised correctly rather than how they were aired.

I get dealing with the loudest group first but at some stage you need to focus on the niche areas - if they improve the customisation of how the media can be organised they’ll likely develop a huge support group for that niche and obtain lifelong members.

Sure, if you’ve bought the lifetime sub what does it matter but ultimately you want customers to stay and recommend your service to other people which won’t happen if they migrate somewhere else. It’s not about current business, it’s about future customer growth too.

Don’t forget that you need to click the like button on the first post in this thread to show your support for this suggestion!

Can we please get an ETA on this feature. Both Plex and Jellyfin offer this feature which I feel is quite necessary especially when there are files which combine episodes. It is not as big of an issue if the fix was to rename a file, but sometimes, the dvd combines 2-3 episodes which messes up the metadata fetching for all the other episodes following that

Looks like this is scheduled for 8.4.x??? So looking forward to both 8.4 and 8.4.x based on the feature lists; so many things that I’ve been waiting for! With those this will be a plex-killer for sure!

Where are you seeing this info specifically? I can see that it has the planned tag but unable to find any info about what version of Infuse it will be coming out with

Edit: Nvm, I see it now. Pretty excited for this!

Please make sure Emby episode order is supported, in direct mode. All the data is already there and the order should be respected.

+1 for this! I have Firefly is chronological order, not air date. Infuse erroneously forces it to air date

Firefly is fairly easy to deal with since its only one short season. You can override with custom xml metadata.

Example: (save this as an xml file of the same name as the video file, in the same folder) do the same for each file

<media type="TV Show">

    <seriesname>Firefly</seriesname>

    <season>1</season>

    <episode>1</episode>

    <title>Serenity</title>

<description>The adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship.</description>

</media>

But this is cumbersome for shows with many seasons and episodes. Especially kids shows. Because kids shows are notoriously bad at broadcast episodes being out of order, which is the default that TMDB uses. And kids shows usually have dozens of episodes per season and many seasons. I’ve basically given up on trying to keep them organised. Right now I just open an episode and hope for the best!

I’m really looking forward to the alternative episode order feature.

It was definitely a nuisance, but at least they are now in the correct order. Thank you!

I tried testing your method of overriding the episode order for the first season of a series, but nothing changed after creating the .xml files, and scanning the library for changes.

Is there anything else I need to do to make this work?

Not sure, sorry! Are you using Plex/Jellyfin or a standard network share?

You could try changing the file names (both the video file and the xml) to force infuse to re-index them.

I am using a standard SMB network share, from my NAS to my Apple TV.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will try this, and update my comment if it works.

+1 Just did this

Do I need to create xml files for the entire series before it will properly categorize the show? I can see the xml files under edit metadata, but it doesn’t seem to move the videos into the tv series category after selecting it.

This thread is a suggestion for a specific feature the user who started it wants added to Infuse. It’s not currently available but if you too would like this feature you can click on the “like” button in the first post to add your support. Note this thread is tagged as “planned” so it’s on the devs radar.

I tried and had the same problem. I also use a plain SMB share from a NAS. Looks like it’s not supported (as of this writing), so maybe the original poster was getting some extra behavior through Plex or something?

I +1’d this issue but if it’s been in “planned” and/or “upcoming” for literal years I’m not holding my breath. I guess I’ll just have to avoid looking at the thumbnails or reading the descriptions of Cowboy Bebop episodes I’ve already “watched” so as not to spoil the actual episode with that metadata later in the order.

(A note from a maintainer of unrelated projects to the maintainers here: prioritization and non-committal ETAs are fine when properly handled. But there is an implicit understanding for features of this size that if something is “planned” it means “less than two years”. Expectations matter. You’ve overpromised and underdelivered and burnt goodwill on it for no reason.)

Folks

Is it my imagination or has the option to use alternate episode order been removed from the Upcoming Features list? I do see custom TV series will be possible using NFO files in a future release. Maybe that solves the problem another way.

Yes, this request was moved from planned to wishlist for some reason :frowning:
