Option to purchase Pro directly, outside of App Store

Hi,
I want to buy lifetime membership of infuse that is around 120$ or so.

I want to ask why do not you allow purchase of lifetime infuse on your website here instead of giving apple your percentage of money earned on apple store i,e 30% or so just google does with youtube premium or like spotify premium on their website , this way they get to keep all the money.

I will better buy from you directly on this website so that you get to keep 100% of the money. Why do you only allow to purchase infuse membership on apple account ? @james

I’d guess that the percentage that Apple charges is well worth not having to deal with international commerce and taxation.

Also with Apple managing the subscription model program with renewal tracking and notifying users when due in itself is a major pain that Firecore can avoid.

Add to that not having to deal with the credit card companies and other pay venues makes the Apple cut a deal.

Lastly, having Apple handle the storefront and global exchange rates that can change in seconds also sweetens the pot.

I think the answer is much simpler: they aren’t allowed to do it.

Is that why you can’t get VLC on an Apple device?

I’m pretty sure VLC is on the App Store. But what does that have to do with Infuse not being able to sell their app outside the App Store? The examples in the first post (Spotify and YouTube Premium) are music subscription services, which, along with several other types of subscriptions, are allowed to be sold outside the store for obvious reasons. I believe Apple is only now starting to loosen restrictions on these companies even being able to mention that fact in their apps. There are different rules in the EU due to regulations, but even there, Apple is doing everything it can to make the option of going outside the App Store unattractive to developers. That said, you’re probably correct in assuming that many developers wouldn’t do that even if given the opportunity, for all the reasons you mentioned.

Nope, it’s not.
My point was that even though you can as a developer distribute direct to the end user there is more value to the services that Apple provides than many people see.

Nope, it’s not.

Of course it is.

Well it doesn’t appear in the US Mac App store that I can see but that still isn’t the point. Apple does offer an avenue for developers to have users download their apps without the app store BUT the benefits to developers using the Apple app store make it more cost effective than for the devs to create and maintain their own sales entity.

Again this isn’t about the VLC app specifically, it’s about apps being available to Apple users through channels other than the Apple App store and the choice of devs to either use the Apple provided distribution avenue or do it themselves.

Having an alternate method to upgrade to Pro is something we may consider in the future, but it does present some challenges and extra effort to maintain compared to relying on the App Store which in most cases ‘just works’.
