Not sure about one thing

I have the atv 2 on 5.2.1 which only supports a tethered JB atm, I don’t have any saved SHSH, but can I download the saved signatures to install an older version?

Also are the SHSH hardware specific or do all the atvs share a generic one?

The answer to your questions is the SHSH are hardware specific, meaning you can only use YOUR saved signatures.

So the seas0npass just jb’s the atv while the atv flash is required to add apps such as navi?

You are correct that SeasonPass is to the tool that carries out the jailbreaking process.

ATV Flash is only strictly speaking required if you want to install the FireCore apps, although it can also make installing other apps easier.

So I tried to jb tonight with no success, the thing won’t go into DFU mode, because of the white remote i’m guessing according to the jb 101. Why doesn’t this one work? Aren’t they all about the same?

Also when I eventually get this to work, am I able to power off the atv with the power still plugged in to the outlet or does that still require a tetheredboot?

If the version of firmware that you jailbreak (e.g. 2.5.1) is a tethered jailbreak then removing power will trigger it needing a tethered boot again. In such a case you should leave it powered on but simply put it into sleep/standbye mode which avoids the need for a tethered boot.

How come the plastic white remote doesn’t work and I have to use the silver one?

No idea!

I am guessing that there must be some functionality in the silver one that is not present in the white one. For example I do not know if the white one can cause the system to reboot as is required when trying to get into DFU mode.

I got it to reboot by holding menu and down but couldn’t get it to go into DFU, guess I have to look for a silver one.

Ok so I got the 1602 after the JB, but the light never stopped flashing so I unplugged the power and it still kept flashing after I replugged it, while it was flashing, i DFU’d it to tether boot the atv. I see the FC setting icon but I dont have a XBMC icon.

The Jailbreak does not install any apps.  That is why the FireCore logo is added - it gives you a visual indication of having done a successful jailbreak and is normally removed as soon as you install apps.  It is when you install apps with icons that the icons start showing up. FireCore apps can be installed using either ATV Flash, or you can install apps without using ATV Flash by connecting via ssh and then using command line to install them (Google for details).

Oh I was watching the video tutorial in the jailbreak 101 thread and Xbmc was there after the jb so I assumed it came with it.
