Not able to connect via SMB on tvOS 26

I cannot get infuse working at all in TVOS 26. I’m not using profiles. I actually don’t even know what that is or how to set it up. Infuse simply will not connect with my Mac over SMB. It seems like a peer to peer WiFi issue? I have tried (literally for days) everything. I have…

  • Deleted and reinstalled Infuse
  • Forget WiFi and reconnect
  • Factory reset AppleTV
  • Factory reset Router
  • Wifi privacy on Mac set to None, Fixed, Rotating
  • Clearing router DHCP tables
  • Configuring WiFi to use a unified SSID (or not) which seems to silently enable / disable AP isolation

infuse is working on my iPad. And my iPhone. Just not the AppleTV. I’ve done everything short of digging an Ethernet cable out of the junk drawer. I’m absolutely losing my mind.

Debugging rabbit holes aside I have discovered some what I think are reproducible problems

Current config:

  • M2 MacBook Air connected to “unified SSID” (2.4GHz + 5GHz) WiFi
  • Wi-Fi Privacy disabled on the MacBook (so MAC address stays the same)
  • I have an Emby share (on the MacBook) and an SMB for files and folders
  • File sharing is enabled on the Mac
  • My external drive w/ my media is a “Shared Folder”
  • And “Share files and folders using SMB” is checked in the Options…
  • For good measure the MacBook user account is also checked under Windows File Sharing

And what I’m seeing:

  • AppleTV can’t connect to any shares… Emby or SMB. I’ve spent literally 6-8 hours over multiple days resetting and reconfiguring everything possible. No luck.
  • iPad CAN connect to the Emby share (on the same MacBook)
  • iPad cannot connect to the SMB share
  • The Files app on the iPad CAN connect over SMB no problem

What I’ve tried for share settings

  • Name (i.e. macbook.local) vs. IP (i.e. 192.168.2.xx)
  • All the various “SMB Versions” in the advanced settings
  • Adding the MAC address of the MacBook

Absolutely no luck. Nothing works. I’m about to lose it. Honestly I don’t know if the issue if the router or infuse of the “26” versions of the OSes but the fact that the Files app and Emby shares work on the iPad make me suspect Infuse.

Strictly a shot in the dark but have you tried disabling the 5Ghz network?

I’ve had that cause total havoc with smart home devices when both 2.4 and 5 were enabled. Once the 5Ghz was turned off all went as advertised.

Thanks. I mean… I’ve been using this router for a decade with no issues. I have tried separate SSIDs for each radio and that actually seemed to be worse. I also had it with just 5Ghz at one point (2.4 disabled). There is also a “whole home” options which I think creates a unified network but I think that also screws up peer to peer. I have not tried 2.4 only.

It’s maddening because everything has been fine for years. I think the only recent change was all the “26” OSes. I guess I’ll try 2.4 only. It’s maddening tho’ because everything time I try anything like that I have to reset a bunch of devices. But I’ll try. But not today. I’m too tired and hungry and frustrated. Been at this for 5 hours just today and haven’t eaten. Thx.

p.s. I keep coming back to the fact that the Apple Files app connects w/ the same host and credentials just fine. Some share setup option in infuse bring up an embedded version of that file browser and in that scenario it does not work. So weird!!!

@NC_Bullseye Ok colour me confused but turning of the 5GHz band seems to have fixed all my connection issues!

For context, I live near the top floor of a 20 story tower w/ 10 apartments per floor so radio traffic is busy. In retrospect, the fact that my issues seemed random (like files or infuse would work and then it wouldn’t) maybe points to something as simple as interference? Or maybe my ISP router had a recent firmware update that caused client isolation issues? Only in 5GHz? Who knows!

Still odd that I could connect my iPad to my Mac via the Files app w/ SMB but not w/ Infuse. I’m a little concerted them 2.4GHz might be slow but at least (for now) everything seems to be working. I did notice someone new moved in two doors over a couple weeks ago. Maybe their WiFi was messing w/ me? It’s been solid for years so something changed.

Anyway fingers crossed. Thx. I tried absolutely everything but I never would have tried 2.4GHz only because I mean… that’s old right? And I have 12 devices in my apartment (mac, phone, watch, ipads, atv, homepods, ecobee, etc.) and my old Brother Laser Printer is the only device that needs 2.4Ghz. Thx!

What brand and model of router is it? Maybe we can figure out what gremlin is causing the issue.

Glad your back running right, there are so many variables in LAN settings that could cause this from having a static IP set to a Guest Wifi setting so we can dig around some if you like.

Thanks again @NC_Bullseye Sagecom AKA “Bell Home Hub 3000” from my ISP but I’m all good now. You can stop reading now or keep going for a fun story :slightly_smiling_face:

I was experiencing multiple issues…

  • Apple HomePods couldn’t talk to AppleTV (Home Hub) or stay in a reliable Stereo Pair
  • Home Sharing / Computers app on AppleTV couldn’t connect Mac at all
  • AppleTV also couldn’t ping the Mac but that might be expected… not sure
  • Files App on iPad sometimes could connect to Mac and other times not
  • Files App sometimes saw my Internal Drive but not my external Media Drive
  • Emby metadata was always painfully slow, broken, or incomplete
  • Infuse could sometimes connect to Emby and/or SMB on AppleTV and/or iPad and sometimes not. Seemed random!
  • And more…

And it seems like there were multiple simultaneous failures because…

  • After 100 resets on a dozen devices the one thing I did NOT think about was the USB Hub in my Dell Monitor… that my Media Drive is connected to! DUH! Resetting the monitor and re-authorizing the hub on my Mac suddenly fixed a TON of issues (but not all)
  • Replacing the router with a new one from my ISP today fixed all of my Apple HomePod issues! WOO! (likely was a peer-to-peer issue)

Even after all that though Infuse still wasn’t working on the AppleTV… Emby or SMB (but iPad was rock solid). Tried updating TVOS to the 26.1 beta. No luck. One last reset. No luck. Last resort was copper. Hooked the AppleTV up to Ethernet and BAM! Infuse is 100% HAPPY! And snappy! Should’ve wired it long ago.

So yah… haywire USB Hub needed a kick. Router / Modem needed replacement. AND I think my AppleTV has a hardware issue but hardwiring it is a good workaround until I eventually replace it (supposed to be a new one coming soon)

Sorry about this thread. I should’ve known it wasn’t Infuse. But you can understand why I was so confused. Multiple failures on multiple devices at once. Although now that I think of it some of those issues like Emby being flaky and my HomePods being flaky have been nagging me for awhile. It wasn’t until Infuse completely broke that I really discovered everything.
