I've just recently purchased ATV Flash and am having several issues playing ripped DVDs streamed from my NAS using Nito TV. Let me preface this by first stating that using XBMC they work without any problem whatsoever.
The issues I am facing are that firstly the screen formats incorrectly - a 16:9 widescreen DVD menu screen which should fill the screen is compressed into a letterbox format. The movie is then compressed into an ultra narrow letterbox format. There appears to be no settings for screen format so I've no idea how to resolve this issue. Secondly, the attempts at playback are woeful - stuttering choppy audio and a multitude of dropped frames. Its like trying to watch a slow slideshow with someone rapidly turning the sound off and on multiple times per second.
If I load XBMC, the DVD menu screen is the right screen format and so is the movie. There are zero audio issues and no dropped frames. Playback is as smooth as if I was playing directly from a DVD.
I would prefer not to have to load ripped DVDs directly onto the ATV, and XBMC shows me that there shouldn't be any issues streaming the movie over the network from my NAS. I've seen a number of posts on the forum relating to Nito TV issues with DVDs without any satisfactory answers. Everything is up to date, smart installer was run, and I've been able to stream smaller compressed xvid files via Nito TV without any real issue. Nito TV issues are the same whether I attempt to play a DVD ISO file or a folder containing the VOB files. I'm streaming over Wireless-N and my NAS has load balanced dual gigabit interfaces. I'd prefer NOT to have to load XBMC if at all possible and just access my movies from the Media menu on the ATV.
I wouldn't have paid for ATV Flash if I thought I was going to have to resort to using XBMC as I would have just got the free patchstick option.
Can anyone help with the Nito TV issues? Many thanks.
You know - we pay a premium for what is a bundled collection of free software. With the premium I would expect some level of support - isn't that what we are paying for?
Given that this exact issue has been raised before - why has it not been addressed?
I'll point you towards this thread that is STILL unresolved:
http://forum.firecore.com/topic/1409
It is the same issue I've raised.
Nito TV is effectively useless for network streaming. Given XBMC and Boxee don't have the issue it isn't network related - it is an issue with this product. There is NO, I repeat NO configurable option for buffering. Given the appalling performance I would suspect Nito TV has little to no buffering at all. This makes Nito TV and the Media option that this product installs on the menu completely worthless if you want to use this product in this way.
So we're left with XBMC and Boxee if we want to stream over a network? Why exactly did I pay for this product?
Come on Firecore, pull your finger out and offer some support here.
I've just updated Nito TV to 0.9.5 and it is now even worse. The compressed xvid files that previously streamed ok now have absolutely appalling stuttering audio.
I'd apologise for the rant but given you've not bothered to reply, it appears that you care little for paying customers.
Is your AppleTV connected via a wired or wireless connection? DVD streams are best played over a wired connection, but if a wifi connection is the only possibility you will actually get better performance streaming DVDs to the AppleTV by setting your router to use a 802.11g network instead of 802.11n.

One can only assume that you didn't actually bother to read what I wrote but simply replied to the title of this thread, because every question you asked was already answered in the first post.
Yes it is wireless, yes it is wireless-N. Why should one stream via wireless-G when it clearly works correctly over wireless-N if you use XBMC??? And the incorrect frame formatting issues? I suppose that's due to wireless-N as well is it?
Nito TV is the problem. The problems have been mentioned before. Do you even support anything within your bundled collection or is it simply a matter of you supporting the installer only and not the operation of the product you sell???
Come on.
If I'd wanted to use XBMC only I wouldn't have paid 50 bucks for your product. I'm not about to copy a DVD over to the ATV to watch it via Nito TV when it should be streaming over wireless-N like any other product seems able to...
I see the aspect ratio issue is a known issue, and has been a problem for some time:
http://forum.firecore.com/topic/2915
So when is this likely to be corrected? Even copying DVD files over onto the ATV to get over the network streaming performance issues isn't going to resolve that problem.
Shouldn't you be advising of known issues to potential buyers?
That you advertise the product by saying:
"Access Media Anywhere Drag and drop media onto your AppleTV or even stream it from most NAS devices. Includes support for FTP, SMB and NFS protocols."
isn't exactly correct now is it?
"Satisfaction Guaranteed Not happy? Just let us know and we’ll do whatever it takes to make it right."
So we've been letting you know - what exactly are you doing to make it right??? Telling me to try wireless-G isn't acceptable. And please advise of a date for resolution of the known aspect ration problem.
The 1080i screen aspect issue is currently being worked on. 1080i is a bit interesting as the behavior isn't consistent across all TV models. Some TVs will exhibit this issue, while others will not. If your TV supports either 720p or 1080p we recommend using those.
I have exactly the same problem - at 1080i Nito TV letterboxes the .iso or VIDEO_TS folder dvd content.
I have also tried to stream my DVD library over wireless n and g and had no success at all.
I have eventually bought an external HD to attach via USB to the Apple TV with my dvd files copied on to it and reduced the video playback to 720p.
with that combination Nito TV works ok - but I am also pissed off about spending $50 to get a solution to stream video content that utlimately doesn't work.
