New to JB the ATV a quick couple of ?s

Hi Chaps…

This is a very new experience for myself, never had a ATV but love the idea of xbmc… I have some minor history in JBing… done a couple of Ipad 1’s a few Ipad 2’s, and an IP4…

I have a couple of quick questions if someone could possibly help me with…

1: Recently purchased a 2nd hand ATV, originally thought I was getting a fair deal, until I booted it up and found the shop had upgraded the SW to 6.0.1.

(would I be correct in stating that there is no JB available for this yet)??

(also I don’t believe the original owner ever JB it,) simply because there are no blobs available anywhere for my unit, It’s a MC572B/A on 6.0.1 6646.80.1…

I’ve looked at way too many utube vids, and cannot believe the amount of “do it this way” “no, do it that way” answers.

So I decided to just try it out myself… I ran Seasonpass, Plugged in the USB cable, I got a couple of quick blinks on the white diode on front of ATV, then nothing…

This time I attempted to try with power lead plugged in, this worked a treat, seems that without any power to ATV the unit would just not recognise being plugged in…

Seasonpass made me wait a short while, (cannot remember in what order I saw the next bit, sorry chaps… (dont know if this was before holding both button or after)…

but I just managed to read… 1B55 (missed the next bit)

then it said uploading payload.bin, and after a few seconds I had this “Seasonpass was unable to save signatures for this appletv” at this point I decided to call it a day, as my 8 year old was about to come in

So as a quick check I tried TUmbrella, and the reply I got was as expected:

but I tried with Ifaith and I got this back….

1210662139214-appletv2,1-7.0.4bGM.shsh

1210662139214-appletv2,1-7.1b1.shsh

I take it that 6.0.1 is no longer being signed then, and only 6.1.4 is… (is this correct).

I have the unit set up to not upgrade firmware, a bit obvious this one, but I nearly got caught out.

Now this is the biggy… will I ever be able to JB this unit with 6.0.1 on it ?? (remember I have no blobs)

(one thing I don’t understand, how can Ifaith see these newer blobs but TUmbrella fails… (Is it because TUmbrella only looks for possible JB blobs)… complete guess on my part.

Still at least I can still use xbmc on the ipad2 for the time being…  (just wished i could airplay it though)…

If there is any more info required chaps please ask as I’m total newb to JB the ATV…

Really appreciate any advice, comments, or help…

TLDR but I believe Apple is still signing version 5.3 so you can perform a tethered jailbreak using Seas0nPass for Windows in the following link… http://support.firecore.com/entries/387605

Hey thanks for the reply Sufferinsuccotash,

If your still about is this the version your talking about ? 5.3.0 (10B809) AppleTV3,1_5.3_10B809_Restore.ipsw

so in affect I would be doing a downgrade,… but wouldn’t i need blobs to be able to do that?

Hi all,

Can someone please reply to this chaps…

Doing this on a win7 laptop next to telly…

ran seasonpass, but just hangs… (the very detailed instructions seem a little faulty,

Step 4: When prompted, connect your Apple TV to your Mac/PC using a micro-USB cable (leave power cable disconnected).

I had to put in the usb cable to get seasonpass to start downloading the firmware, its in the process of unzipping at the moment, so what happens with step 4 now… if the usb cable is already installed…???

Hi all,

Quick update…

1: Cancelled request to download blobs, this enabled seasonpass to download ipsw

2:Unzipping IPSW

3:Compressing IPSW

4:press MENU & PLAY to go into DFU mode --------- okay

5:please wait for script

6:extracting software

7:verifying appe tv software

8:restoring Apple TV Software

9:Verifying Appe TV Software

10:Firmware restore successful

11:help  what now,  do I just click “Okay” on seasonpass, and reconnect hdmi, or do I need to the Boot Tethered thing, At the moment the power is “off”… please reply chaps…

Yes, Seas0nPass will automatically downgrade and jailbreak your device on firmware version 5.3

No, you don’t need blobs for 5.3 because Apple is still signing 5.3

Yes, 5.3 is a tethered jailbreak so you will need to follow the directions on how to boot tethered.

Thanks again for the reply Sufferinsuccotash…

Well I switched on the mains…

Clicked “Boot Tethered” on seasonpass, told me to press “Menu & Play” for 7 seconds…

It uploaded a few files

Told me to remove USB and reconect HDMI, did this and the AppleTV booted into the new start up page…

One thing I noticed before going back to 5.3, under “General Settings” you had (the wife said she thought it was - Software Updates) and you could turn them off, It now says “Update Software” and I cannot find any way of being able to turn it off.

I am a little worried about this, as I dont fancy having to do the tethered boot everyday, I also read on another forum that someone elses JB was updated overnight while the unit was in standby.

Could this happen to me??

or does Seasonpass do something to the ipsw to stop the updates, frightening to think but apart from clicking update I suppose theres no other way of testing this is there??

Also tried to no avail to download blobs, tried Seasonpass but that just started downloading the ipsw again and didn’t ask if I wanted to save them, so I cancelled the download.

I then tried Ifaith, same as before, only blobs available were for 6.1.4 and a couple higher.

then tried Tinyumbrella, %^%&% nightmare, couldn’t get the unit out of DFU, so had to pull the plug and do another thered boot with SP.

one good thing I can see the RED FC Logo.

Really appreciate the help here…

(p.s. I read somewhere about hosts file, (I use this on all my home P.C.s to block outgoing content), does seasonpass do anything similar to this??)

To stop update you can install ATVFlash and that will stop the updates or follow this guide:

On Mac:

  • Open Terminal (Under Applications > Utilities)
  • Type in ssh root@apple-tv.local
  • (If apple-tv.local doesn’t work for you, you’ll need to find and then enter your Apple TV’s local IP address)
  • If prompted, accept the certificate
  • Enter password “alpine” when prompted (without the quotes)
  • Backup your hosts file using the following command cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.bak
  • Type in the following commands pressing return after each
  • sudo bash -c ‘echo “127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com” >> ../../etc/hosts’
  • sudo bash -c ‘echo “127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com” >> ../../etc/hosts’
  • sudo bash -c ‘echo “127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net” >> ../../etc/hosts’
  • To exit the Putty session, type logout and press enter

On PC:

If you have a PC, then grab Putty and use it to SSH on to your AppleTV and follow the above steps.

Performing an update at a later date?

If you wish to perform an update at a later date you can either connect, via USB, to your Mac/PC and perform a restore/update or alternatively SSH on to your AppleTV and remove the line you added above.

To remove the line:
  • Mac users: Open Terminal (Under Applications > Utilities)
  • PC users: Open Putty
  • Type in ssh root@apple-tv.local
  • (If apple-tv.local doesn’t work for you, you’ll need to find and then enter your Apple TV’s local IP address)
  • If prompted, accept the certificate
  • Enter password “alpine” when prompted (without the quotes)
  • Type in the following commands one at a time each followed by pressing return
  • sed -i ’127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com/d’ /etc/hosts
  • sed -i ‘127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com/d’ /etc/hosts
  • sed -i ‘127.0.0.1 appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/d’ /etc/hosts
  • To exit the Putty session, type logout and press return
  • Reboot your AppleTV and it should detect and offer updates again

Alternatively, if you kept a backup of your hosts file like the first set of instuctions suggested, type the following command after entering your password

  • cp /etc/hosts.bak /etc/hosts

Partial Manual Edit (Uses NitoTV)

It is also possible to stop AppleTV from detecting updates by installing a package from NitoTV. To do so:

  • Mac users: Open Terminal (Under Applications > Utilities)
  • PC users: Open Putty
  • Type in ssh root@apple-tv.local
  • (If apple-tv.local doesn’t work for you, you’ll need to find and then enter your Apple TV’s local IP address)
  • If prompted, accept the certificate
  • Enter password “alpine” when prompted (without the quotes)
  • Enter the following command:
  • echo “deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org ./” > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list
  • Followed by:
  • apt-get update
  • Followed by:
  • apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV
  • ATV will install nitoTV. Once it’s complete your SSH client will return to a prompt. You need to force a reboot of your ATV so type the following command:
  • killall Lowtide
  • Once ATV reboots you’ll have a new menu item, nitoTV. Browse to it and then choose to install the package “UpdateBeGone“. This makes the necessary tweaks we’ve described above.
