A new media player for Apple TV called Neptune has been released. While the UI is somewhat questionable, it can convert Dolby Vision Profile 7 on the fly and output the video in Dolby Vision. From what I’ve heard, this isn’t the “fake” Dolby Vision approach used by apps like Plex.
Would this be something worth investigating for Infuse, and potentially implementing in the future?
Also, I’d be interested to hear if any of the experts here have already tried it and what they think. Does it actually do a proper Dolby Vision Profile 7 conversion? At the very least, is it better than falling back to HDR?
This has already been technically implemented by some players; it depends on whether James is willing to proceed. If he is, it can be completed quickly.
If something like this were implemented, it would be good to know if there was a FEL layer in the file being disregarded. Probably could be buried on the playback stats screen.
This would be great. A lot of files are MEL only, and while converting them to Profile 8 only takes a few minutes on an NVMe SSD, it can take much longer on a regular HDD. So this would be a real time-saver.
I’ve actually seen another player in beta claiming to handle FEL sources as well, but I’m not sure how it deals with files where the FEL expands brightness, as converting those to profile 8 would result in incorrect tone mapping.
Just a heads-up: there is already an existing Firecore feature request for Dolby Vision Profile 7 → Profile 8 support. Best to vote for it there to show there’s demand for this feature:
