I recently upgraded my computer to a new m4 mac mini, and everything has been working great. However, because I need to connect a bunch of peripherals, I have my external hard drives that house my media files connected through a thunderbolt hub. Once I connected them to the hub, I started to see a problem where I need to wake my computer any time I want to view videos through Infuse on the AppleTV. If I don’t, it will spin and then say “Can’t Connect to Emby.” This didn’t happen when I had the drives connected directly to the computer. I really need these drives to be connected through the hub, but it’s annoying to have to wake my computer anytime I want to connect. Does anyone have any advice on steps I could take to eliminate this problem?
Not many options, you can set the Mac to never sleep and then it’d keep everything ready. You can also check to make sure you have turned on Wake for network access in the power saving section.
That’s one of the big reasons I went to a NAS from Mac for my system.
Another potential option would be set up an SMB connection from Infuse to the Mac, and have it set to scan a folder with a single video file.
This wouldn’t really be used for any library features or video playback, but it would allow you to add the Mac’s MAC (Media Access Control) address to Infuse, which will allow Infuse to automatically wake the device when it tries to connect.
Note: Your Mac will have a unique MAC address for each network interface (EG Wi-FI, Ethernet, etc…) so be sure to enter the one you want to use.
Also, before adding the SMB connection in Infuse you will want to ensure SMB is enabled on your Mac. This guide has more info on the steps for doing this.
Do you know how can I do that?
After you get SMB set up per the link that @james provided then you’ll be creating a share (albeit a share with a single video file) on the Mac.
Don’t forget to add the proper MAC address either wifi or Ethernet when you create the share.
Thanks for the help! I’ll play around with a few ideas tonight. A NAS is my long-term plan, but I’ve been mostly happy with my external disc setup with my mac so far. Hopefully I’ll get things ironed out.
I wanted to follow up with my solution for anyone who may have the same problem. I set up the Amphetamine app on my computer to operate on a schedule of times when I may want to use Infuse. This is working great for me!
Thanks for letting us know! Now you can save up for that NAS and your Mac can get a breather. LOL.
That’s the plan!
