I’m writing this new thread because it’s a specific setup question that may be hard to attach to an existing thread.
My iMac late 2015 is no longer officially supported bye Apple (Monterey, is the last officially supported OS)
Anyway I have my media on an external drive and shared by file sharing using SMb.
My question is, the Media drive is formatted to HFS+, and the other versions of macOS I run are Mojave (for 32 bit), and Catalina (for the old style UI). The problem I’ve run into is even with turning on file sharing, Infuse doesn’t automatically see the existing share when booting into a different version, even though the login and name are the same across all installed versions. My intent was to create one share, which was done in Monterey, and have it carry across the other two versions as well. Is there a way to do this? FYI, I got it to work with Plex, I copied the original Plex config between the different APFS volumes for the OS installs, and Plex works fine, it just states the macOS version it’s running on in the authorized Devices info. So, that’s what I’m hoping to do with Infuse and File sharing (if possible)
If you have multiple installs of macOS on a single computer these can likely be set up to have matching sharing settings (so sharing to Infuse on another will work no matter which version you are running). However, the sharing settings for each version are managed independently within each version of macOS so you will want to ensure File Sharing has been enabled for each and every version.
Thanks James, I understand the guide. My concern was duplicate items in Infuse pointing to the specific share for each OS instance. For example, the initial share was created under Monterey with the computer name of iFrog5K, with my admin user’s login and pass for the share. However, turning on File sharing under the Catalina install with the same Computer name, and login / pass details, Infuse can’t find the media even though on the computer the same drive is present on any install, so is it Infuse that needs the specific share added for each OS, even with the same info on each on the computer side?
I’ll have to do that again in the router. Usually the Mac is good about keeping the set IP, but since it’s DHCP it can always change. However, in this case it seems to be OS related, as rebooting back into Monterey from Catalina restored share functionality from within Infuse. I’ll take a look to see what’s going on. I’ll try to access the Catalina share from an Old MBP running Big Sur. as that will tell me more than Infuse can.
Hi @James Just thought I would follow up. I found the issue I was having. It wasn’t the IP address as @NC_Bullseye suggested. Apparently Catalina has broken security when it comes to sharing and permissions for external drives appear broken, and I wasn’t able to fix it. Since Catalina was there simply for legacy and a test, and had no real purpose, I wiped out that APFS Volume, and just have Monterey, and Mojave now. Both work correctly with Infuse.
I was able to find the issue with Catalina by using the older MBP running Big Sur. Whenever I would try to connect to the external drive by sharing while running Catalina, I would get the “operation couldn’t be completed error because the original for Plex Media could not be found”. “Plex Media” being my external drive name. So, turns out I had it right on my own, but because of Catalina being broken, I didn’t realize it at first.
