Metadata cache keeps clearing!

Hello friends -

We’re still experimenting with some options here, and working to find a solution that helps those who are being affected.

Based on the metrics we have, we believe this is currently affecting 3-5% of Apple TV users on tvOS 16. The rates for tvOS 17 users appear to be better as this is happening 25-30% less often. However, the group using tvOS 17 is much smaller so it’s too early to tell if this is an actual improvement or just a coincidence.

Regardless, we realize the situation is not great if you are seeing this happen on a regular basis.

There is one thing we would like to get some feedback on to see if it makes a meaningful difference, and that is to reduce the overall storage footprint of Infuse. The thought is this may help reduce the frequency at which the system clears data, since the overall storage used by Infuse would be lower.

To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Navigate to Infuse > Settings > Shares > Share Name > Edit Share
  2. Under Advanced, disable the ‘Pre-Cache Images’ option
  3. Repeat for other shares saved on the device

With this option disabled, Infuse would pre-cache textual data only, and then download images as-needed while browsing files. Having some data on whether or not this makes a difference will help guide us moving forward.

There are a few other options we’re working through (with varying levels of complexity) that could also help, and hope to have more news on these soon.

Thanks!
