is ist possible to relocate the Media Player metadata/thumbnail folder (or file?) to an external drive or NAS? I did that with XBMC and I ask myself, if that is possible with aTVFlash MP, too.

I was just asking myself the same thing.
Since the metadata is located here: /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/Media, will the thumbnails be there too?
I ask because, this way we can make a back up in our computer and restore the preferences back after a firmware restore or somehing.
Is this kind of back up possible?
To backup your settings you just need a copy of this folder:
/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/Media
In there is a folder .thumbnails but I have no idea, if the metadata is stored there.

Where exactly are you seeing the ‘out of memory’ issues?
Do you have XBMC installed by chance? Some of the XBMC add-ons can take up A LOT of space, so pruning some of those out would be my first suggestion if you’re out of disk space on the Apple TV.
