Loss of network connection; iOS update

I recently decided to make more use of my black ATV (as opposed to my silver ATV) and finally jailbroke it and added ATVFlash.  I have Apple TV Software version 4.3 (2557) and ATVFlash version 1.2

  1.  I am getting network disconnects while I watch programs (movies or TV); this is true whether the movie is streamed normally from iTunes or from the hard disk connected to my Mac Mini thru my network to the Media menu.  I suspect that this is an AFP problem.  Sometimes it is just a matter of waiting a few seconds and restarting the program and sometimes the problem lasts much longer requiring restarts of both the ATV and my Mac Mini.

This sometimes manifests itself in my Mac Mini (running iTunes with Home Sharing turned on) not showing in the Computers menu.

  1.  I should probably update the ATV to the latest iOS.  How do I do this properly?  Should I do a Restore in the General/Reset Menu, then Update Software and then jailbreak again and reinstall ATVFlash; or is there an easier way to update the iOS?  Thanks!

I would appreciate at least a reply to point 2 above; repeated here:

  1. I should probably update the ATV to the latest iOS [currently Apple TV Software version 4.3 (2557) and ATVFlash version 1.2]. How do I do this properly? Should I do a Restore in the General/Reset Menu, then Update Software and then jailbreak again and reinstall ATVFlash; or is there an easier way to update the iOS?

Updating to the latest 4.4.4 version would probably be the best option.

To update, I’d recommend the following.

  1. Perform a backup through the Maintenance --> Settings --> Manage Backups menu (a normal backup will be fine).
  2. Run the current version of Seas0nPass. This will update and jailbreak your AppleTV at the same time.
  3. Install aTV Flash (black) 1.2 from a Mac/PC.
  4. Install your desired plugins through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.
  5. Restore your saved settings through the Maintenance --> Settings --> Manage Backups menu.

Thank you James!

A “RESTORE” is not needed, just a Backup from Maintenance --> Settings --> Manage Backups menu?

Right. Running Seas0nPass and restoring in iTunes acts as a restore, so you won’t need to do one on the AppleTV itself.

James, I’ve got a support ticket open simular to the process you describe. All i need to know is do I upgrade to the latest version of iTunes on my PC as point number 1, then follow the rest of the steps?

Thanks.

You can upgrade iTunes if you wish, but as long as you’re running iTunes 10.5 or later the actual version will not matter.

James: I followed your instructions:

1.  I did the Maintenance Backup

2.  I did the SeasonPass jailbreak

3.  Upon completion of the jailbreak, I disconnected the ATV2 from my computer and connected it to HDMI, digital audio and power.

I now have a permanent image of a micro-USB cable below an Icon of iTunes on my TV screen.

I reconnected the ATV2 to my computer, by USB, no power cable.  iTunes then gave me a dialog that the restore failed.

Please help!

Still waiting for help, please!

Have you tried re-downloading SeasonPass and retrying the whole jailbreak?

It is not clear from your description whether you did the jailbreak successfully, but using an old version of SeaonPass so that you got a tethered version of the jailbreak, or whether the jailbreak process failed for you?

Using the Firecore link, it is supposed to download the most recent version of Seasonpass, which I installed untethered.  I did not try anything again, as I was hoping for instruction before attempting anything more.

Sorry, I must have missed your other post.

What you’re describing sounds like the result of a ‘tethered’ jailbreak, which may mean you’re using an older version of Seas0nPass. Which version of Seas0nPass are you using?

While I thought I used 0.8.1, I also see that 0.7.9 is on my hard disk; which I have now deleted.

No problem: your support is ALWAYS appreciated.  I am just waiting for your suggestions.

0.8.1 is the latest version, so I’d try re-jailbreaking the AppleTV with that version and it should resolve your issues.
