Live activity background downloads

Hi,

background downloads feel somewhat unreliable in that they sometimes do not continue in the background without any feedback.

Could live acitivites be applied to this and show the progress and ideally download speed for outstanding downloads?

Safari does this very well but I don‘t know if that uses some functionality not available for third party apps.

I‘d very much like to use Infuse more on the go and this would make it much more comfortable to get content onto the device.

Thanks

This is how it looks in notification center or on the lockscreen when using background downloads in DJI Fly. It would be great if this was possible in Infuse.

Apple has added support for long-running tasks in the background in their latest iOS/iPadOS 26, but of course, app developers need to implement the feature in their apps, and I hope that the Infuse team will add it soon.

This is a very much needed feature. It’s a huge pain to keep the app on-screen and the display powered on when I’m syncing several movies from my Plex server. The Plex app for iOS/ipadOS support background downloading, so I can queue the downloads, power off the screen, and walk away. Very confused as to why this has not been implemented yet with Infuse. It’s a great app but this is a very important BASIC feature that should be added.

It would be nice if there could be a Live Activity in the Dynamic Island whenever Infuse is downloading items so that we can watch the progress without having to stay in the app.

This is now available in Infuse 8.5.1.

Thanks, James :rose:

May I please add a quick feedback after trying the feature? It seems that the feature is working as intended, which is great, but the only issue is that it works with one file at a time. I know that Infuse downloads the files one by one, which works great if I’m in the app, but as far as I know, the API for this feature requires the user’s initiation, not the app, so when I try to download two episodes, for instance, the live activity shows only one, and when I leave it still downloading, it completes successfully, but the second one pauses in the background since the app can’t add it to the live activity by itself and waits until I go back in the app to initiate the second download. I have attached two examples: one from Apple’s 2026 keynote when they announced the feature and the other from Crunchyroll. They show the difference between asking the app to download or more than one file. If I download two or three files, they should be added to the live activity from the beginning so the app can finish the whole thing in the background. Thanks again for your hard work.

Good find. The live activity ending after the first file of the queue is a bit impractical

Thanks for the feedback!

There are a few more potential use cases of backgrounding tasks we’re working to add and we can take a look at this as well.
