LAN versus WAN

Hello,

I use Infuse (Pro) at home to stream my TV shows and movies, which are stored on my Synology NAS, via my Apple TV 4K. I also have Infuse on my MacBook Pro and my iPad Pro.

I’ll be traveling for several months, and I’d like to access my NAS using a VPN (Tailscale).

My issue is that I’d like to replace LAN access with WAN access on my iPad and mount the shared folders using their Tailscale IP addresses instead of the local IPs. But if I do that, it will mess up Infuse on my Apple TV 4K and my MBP.

Any ideas? Thanks.

My bad, I must have gone into the wrong section :innocent:, :check_box_with_check:

Its not that difficult

  • Install Tailscale on NAS and client machines so they are in your tail net
  • Point all client machine Infuse settings to NAS’s Tailscale IP or DNS name
  • If you NAS has Jellyfin, SMB, NFS, whatever Infuse will connect via the Tailscale IP/DNS name, that’s it.

It works anywhere on the planet you are, even if you are in local network, you never have to futz with it again. If you are local to the NAS, Tailscale nodes finds it local and no speed hit and local IP is irrelevant (I stopped assigned static IPs local because of this). That’s the beauty of Tailscale.

You will find other uses for services you want to access outside the house with Tailscale, it has infinite possibilities with set and forget mechanism. Example: I added my Adguard Home service to Tailscale, and I can use it as my DNS server with Adblock when im away from home. I never have to mess with settings, Tailscale has a built in feature to point DNS lookups to a node on your tail net for all the nodes on your tail net.

People use this a ability and ship their Tailscale nodes around the planet setup for DHCP because the moment its plugged in, its in their tail net, don’t matter about local LAN setup.

I’m already using Tailscale :face_with_raised_eyebrow:, if i use Tailscale IP on my iPad, it will spread all over my devices, i would like to avoid it, it’s basicaly my point.

“Spread”? You mean the infuse settings? Disable cloud sync

Yes. I thought about it, but I need to give it a try, but I think without iCloud I’m losing track of where I am—I’m talking about reading.

We’re working on a feature that will allow a share to have multiple addresses (EG primary and secondary) and we expect to have this available in 8.4.6.

Great, thanks @james

Hi,did I misunderstand something, or did I not look hard enough? I don’t see anything in the latest version…

Hi, I can wait, no urgency, or switch to VPN IP. Please, what’s your roadmap?

It’s currently in progress for 8.4.8. You can follow this thread for updates on upcoming features.

Thanks.

Previously, it was for version 8.4.6. I’ll keep an eye on this thread.

@james I replaced the local IP with the one provided by Tailscale, but now I can no longer see the “Movies & TV Shows” shortcuts—only the ones I added. However, since I have multiple sources, I have two “TV Shows” shortcuts.

Usually, I do that on my Apple TV 4K, I hide my own shortcuts, I don’t know what to do from my iPad Pro. Can you help? Thanks!

Right, I’ve figured out how to add the standard categories – it’s odd that it has to be done manually on iOS – but I don’t have a ‘hide favourites’ menu.

Logically, if I delete them, I’ll lose everything…

While we wait for version 8.4.8, how can I hide favourites on iOS/iPadOS in the same way as on tvOS?

I’m continuing my investigation. I added my account to my dad’s Apple TV, added the Tailscale IP address and the bookmarks, and everything is working fine.

However, while I was able to hide the bookmarks on tvOS, I can’t do it on iPadOS or macOS. When I search the website, I only see the description for tvOS.

So is that it—is it impossible to hide a shortcut except from tvOS? Thanks.
