Judder when playing videos on iOS 18.1 iPhone 16 Pro Max

Are you also using Plex to stream to infuse Radek?
I mean i have already tried literally every Server setting and infuse setting. But because the same judder occurs in the Plex App I assume theres a connection. And using the legacy Player does fix it in plex

Nope. Using Emby Premium with direct play. No transcoding.

I’m also using direct play via Plex. But it happens with transcoded media aswell. And to James: The file does not matter, it happens with every single file that has 24hz refresh rate.

I have done a lot of further testing and can only conclude that the matter of transmission or file format simply does not matter. The issue persists in every video that has a 24hz refresh rate, which basically means every tv show or movie, period.

I find it hard to believe that this issue can not be replicated or noticed by some people, because even my girlfriend who truly does not care about image quality can immediatly identify the stutter upon viewing. It does however only happen on Iphone 16 pros, I can not replicate the issue on an Iphone 14, 15 or even Ipad 11 pro.

I have to assume that it has something to do with the refresh rate management, but you can’t really check the refresh rate the Iphone is actively using. Some sketchy overlays I tried reported the Iphone to be at a locked 60hz refreshrate when playing a 24hz Video. With a 120hz Display, this should obviously be played at either 24hz, 120hz or one dividing refresh rate in between to avoid 24p judder. You can force the Iphone to refresh at 120hz by activating an Overlay and rapidly moving it while playing the video and this seems to temporarily fix the issue until you stop moving.

And yes I am aware that Oled displays present 24hz content a bit differently due to their extremely quick response rate, but the Issue on the Iphone pro 16 is extreme and way worse than the slight stutter of 24hz you can observe on Oled TVs or monitors.

I am no iOS developer but I found this as a starting point:

Maybe this is worth looking into James, I am sure that RadekB and I can rule out User error.

I will definitely rule out OLED being the culprit here  I have a OLED TV which utilizes AppleTV’s content matching (mainly refresh rate) and no judder here. And to be clear I’ve turned off all fancy picture smoothing and theatrical enhancements. Besides watching AppleTV shows no judder. And they’re for sure 24fps

It’s not oled, it works fine on an iPhone 13 Pro Max and that’s also oled.

We’ve been looking into this and it seems there have been some changes in one of the recent iOS updates that require a few adjustments in Infuse.

Currently in progress…

Thank you! i Hope the issue can be fixed

I sure hope this can also fix the stutter issue I have on iPad

Edit: As a follow-up, this particular issue on iPad was fixed with the release of iPadOS 18.4. The linked thread has been marked as solved.

I had this issue on some files on iPad Pro. The issue went away after I disabled the 60fps limiting on iPad accessibility settings

This issue here is exactly the same issue I reported to you on multiple occasions, I sent you a movie file in past called the day after tomorrow and the opening scenes with the iceberg you will notice very bad juddering, this changes severity if I bring up the player UI by tapping on it. All video files have this juddering at random times, would be good if you can use tricks that MPV for android uses to fix this, currently using SenPlayer and playback is fine with that.

I have the new iPhone 16E and it’s bad on that for judder

@james there is progress… I would say that it’s like 50/50 now when it’s working fine (expluding the Oled judder due to it’s very fast pixel response), but still needs to be worked on, I’m noticing that for couple of seconds it seems fine, then for couple seconds we have judder, but’s it’s progress  so great job, and keep looking into it, I believe in you guys

In the redesigned Plex App the judder issue has been fixed, so I guess there must be a solution.

The changes we’re adding in 8.1.4 focus on the ProMotion features only. There were some non-standard things in the file you sent in which is actually a separate issue, but could have similar effects.

If you can send in a new report from your device it could be helpful.

I encountered the same issues mentioned earlier in this discussion. I use a 13" iPad Air M3 and, regardless of the video I play (whether through Plex or stored on the device), I notice noticeable stuttering, especially during slow pans or wide shots. These stutters occur randomly and may not be apparent to an untrained eye; however, for someone like me who pays close attention to the video, they are annoying and distracting. I find Infuse to be an excellent media center, but due to these minor issues, I have been forced to switch to VLC (despite its limitations and lack of numerous features) while waiting for an update to fix the problem.

Today’s 8.1.4 update improves support for ProMotion devices running iOS 18.

Thank you so much James. Issue is fixed for me :slightly_smiling_face::slightly_smiling_face:

Can you fix the stuttering for 60hz devices as it’s still unusable for movie watching as it’s juddering bad on most h.264 SDR files

Can you explain what was changed? There are many people here talking about different issues, so it’s impossible to know which issue was actually fixed. The oled stutter has been noticeably bad for me before this update. I haven’t yet checked after the update.

  • judder — when video content frame rate does not match screen refresh rate, most noticeable during panning shots — typically fixed by changing the screen refresh rate to match the video content
  • oled stutter — the effect caused by fast response times of oled displays, most noticeable during panning shots — typically fixed with black frame insertion (BFI) or motion/frame interpolation
  • playback performance issues — the hardware (disk, ram, video decoder, etc) can’t keep up with the video stream

This Thread was specifically about an issue with Iphones that have promotion. It presented itself like 24p judder. The Plex Media Player had the same issue, so I guess the Problem was some change Apple Made to promotion.

This judder has been fixed now it seems. I tested about 20 Files and no judder occured
