Now that Plex has released their new “Plex Experience” crappy app, I really want to switch over to Infuse completely. One thing I noticed however though is how JF ties into Infuse vs. how Plex does.
When I connect my JF server to Infuse, I get large horizontal tiles showing my JF libraries (in the Files section), However, with Plex it appears that I just get the libraries that I have favorited with no artwork. Is there a way to make Plex libraries look similar to JF?
Just wondering what the best approach is for using Infuse with either JF or Plex (from a visual standpoint)? I do need to keep my Plex server around as I have other users that use it (at least for now).
Hi @swallman, here is how my Infuse view looks of Plex, I’m in the same boat in needing to keep my Plex server for the same kind of reasons.
Firstly this is how my Plex looks, with my “home” screen showing a series of Plex Collections that I’ve setup specific to what I want to see. This is a very flexible solution that allows total granularity of what you want to see.
I have a few more when you scroll down for specific interests. The first and third rows of content are Plex Collections, the middle one is a local Infuse library that basically helps me see stuff I’ve downloaded and not watched, I spend quite a bit of time away from my home network to downloads are very important to me.
Digging into the first Plex Collection, this is the setup and logic screen in Plex, just to help you see (if you don’t already know, and sorry if I’m telling you stuff you already are across) how the Collections are build and the logic you can use to include / exclude:
One additional tip, if you wanted to see the full libraries at any time with this approach, if you set them as favourites from the “add files” option, they show up as sub-folders under files.
All that said, I’d still rather have this full workflow setup in Infuse, basically showing a library with filters on home scree, but to be honest once you setup the initial collections, you don’t touch them again so it’s not a big deal (but a little fiddle up-front).
LiveTV support, however this is very broken in with the New Experience clients, very broken indeed.
Multiple users with reasonable about of customisation in settings, not sure if any of the other solutions offer this, but it will take me a while (if at all) to get family to consider changing, not worth the fight.
X265/HEVC transcode (default) for streaming, don’t think anyone else has managed to get to this yet.
Quite a few members of my family are using rather skinny ISP connections (Australia), so they need to reduce the quality of the content. Plex will transcode on the fly now with X265/HEVC…meaning far better outcomes (but hits my Plex server quite hard, so be it).
Does Jellyfin support transcode, or just direct play?
It’ll transcode no problem and also to hevc. Their transcoder is miles ahead of plex. it’ll even transcode and tonemap DV to sdr, where plex cannot for some reason (not technical, just won’t, they can steal the code from Jellyfin to do it if they want to as they both use ffmpeg)
Great insight, thanks for sharing @Johnblaze00 will take a look.
To those who have moved, what are the pitfalls? Given I have a Plex Pass (purchased many moons ago), and have setup my Audio Book library, use OTA and share my library to a few close family members, it might not really be worth the effort to change. But I’m always happy to explore and understand.
