Issue with TV shows and forced subtitles

Hi all,

I’ve been using Infuse (lifetime) with a Plex Server (lifetime) in Direct Mode without issues until recently. I’ve noticed the following subtitle behavior and I’m not sure whether this is due to a misconfiguration or a limitation in Infuse.

I have a TV show with multiple episodes; some episodes include forced subtitles, while others do not.

On the Plex Server, I explicitly select the correct audio track and subtitle track for each episode (forced or none).

When playing the show on Apple TV using the Plex app, subtitles behave correctly: forced subtitles are displayed only when needed, fully respecting the selections made on the Plex Server.

When playing the same content using Infuse, I observe this behavior:

  • If the first episode has forced subtitles, all subsequent episodes automatically show the first available subtitle track, even if it is not forced and was not selected on the Plex Server.

  • After manually disabling subtitles for an episode in Infuse, if the following episode actually contains forced subtitles, Infuse keeps the previous “subtitles off” state and does not enable the forced subtitles automatically.

The Plex client behaves as expected in all cases.

Is this expected behavior in Infuse?

Are there any subtitle-related settings (global or per-library) that could affect this, or is forced-subtitle handling currently limited when using Plex in Direct Mode?

I’m having subtitle issues as well, starting a couple months ago I believe. I haven’t narrowed down to the exact pattern like this, but it may well be the same here. Basically I’m not getting forced subtitles on when they should be, and the full subtitles being selected automatically when either the forced should be, or none at all if no forced exists. This is getting very aggravating as I’m currently binging a series spanning several seasons and perhaps half the episodes in each season have forced subtitles. I’ve pored over my settings and all is kosher here. And yes, the subtitle flags are set correctly in my media.

I’ve stumbled into what the problem appears to be after reviewing a prior post of mine. There used to be a “Forced-only” option in the settings for subtitles. It’s no longer there. Just “Auto”. Needless to say, this is a pretty awful regression.

EDIT: as per reply below, I was looking in the wrong location for this setting, but the problem of Infuse selecting Forced subtitles correctly still persists.

It still shows for me on Infuse 8.3.9.

Ah… I was looking under the language section. I stand corrected on this point. My settings were and are still set to Forced, so there IS still a problem with Infuse selecting Forced subtitles like it is supposed to be.
