Guys, had to reset my ATV2 and went ahead and downloaded FC. However, when I hooked the ATV2 back up, it doesn’t look like it was before. I mean, I don’t have all of the menu options that I did before. Did I do something wrong? Did I forget to upload aTV Flash too? Would be nice if someone wrote a simple guide that you all of us from Step 1 to the final step all inclusive and not broken into different sections. I’m very busy and don’t have a lot of time to do an exhaustive study of what I need to do. Thanks for listening. I’ll await to hear from you.
Guys, I spent several hours trying to get my ATV2 back on line. I restored my ATV2 several times and then downloaded FC, loaded it and then disconnected the USB and reconnected the USB and then loaded the tethered version. I then disconnected the USB and power cable as stated but this part gets me:
How am I supposed to hook it up to HDMI before it stops blinking? I don’t have a cable long enough to do this. I don’t know how I did it late last year, but I’m dazed and confused now. I know when it comes to successfully loading the tethered process that I must disconnect the USB and then attach an HDMI. Well, how can I do this without detaching the power cord to the ATV2 and running upstairs to where my TV is at?
I went through this procedure numerous times and when I hook the ATV2 up t my TV I get the iTunes symbol and a USB cable looking display…I can see the ATV2 still blinking crazy fast too. What the hell am I doing wrong guys?
i should also ask if I have to use a tethered version. My ATV2 shows 5.0 (4099). Do I have to use it or not? Or, am I stuck now because FC does not support this iOS version yet?
If you have firmware 5.0, then you only have a tethered jailbreak available at the moment. In your case it sounds as if you cannot complete the tethered boot stage as to do so you need the ATV2 to be located where it will be used because of the requirement to not disconnect the power after doing the tethered boot? This means the PC/Mac needs to be bought to where the ATV2 is going to be used to complete the tethered boot. It is likely that an untethered jailbreak will appear soon but there is currently no guarantee or ETA for that.
If you did an initial jailbreak last year that would be from before the 5.0 firmware wa released - probably using the 4.4.4 firmware. At that time you could do an untethered jailbreak of the 4.4.4 firmware. That might explain why your are now seeing different behaviour. However unless you backed up the signatures for that release it I no longer possible to revert.
I’ve been having reboot issues but only when trying to access itunes movies and TV for rental etc. Everything else still works. I am not aware of having updated to iOS5 on my ATV but when this morning I decided to back up the SHSH blobs, there was 5, large as life, listed under 4.4.4. Everything else on my ATV is working… plex, nito, access to mu itunes library… but not to itunes online… it just reboots.
So it seems i have an untethered jailbroken 5, quite by accident, but its brought with it some issues I would rather not have.
Does anybody have any explanation for this behaviour? I do not have the appleTV set to update itself willynilly.
I have seen that if standard Apple menus are hidden - in particular the Intenet one.

I think that the option to backup signatures creates them for any release Apple is currently signing (plus any you have saved from earlier backups). You can check what you are actually using under Settings->About. Also the 5.0 firmware has a brand new UI so you cannot get to it without being very aware of the fact.
