Infuse pro to NAS, slow - but NAS and infuse both fast to other sources

Hi all, new Infuse Pro subscriber (for appletv 4k). Excited but running into an issue getting started.

I have a wired gigabit network with ATV4k running Infuse Pro, an older synology ds215j nas, and a win11 desktop.

If I test speed from Infuse to an SMB windows share, I get around 250 mbit.

If I test speed from windows to the NAS, I get around 250 mbit.

But an Infuse speed test targeting the NAS never goes above 95 mbit.

Everything in the chain is running at gigabit, there’s no 100 mbit bottleneck anywhere (and if there were, it would reflect in the windows to nas test which it doesn’t).

Any thoughts would be quite welcome. Did open a case as well.

Cheers.

One thing to try is changing SMB to SMB2 or Legacy from Auto since SMB3 can have security overhead that could slow things down.

Also the speed test in Infuse has built in overhead not just max speed. It simulates handshaking ect encountered during playback so it will usually be lower than an outright speed test.

Are you encountering playback issue or are you just concerned about the speeds your seeing?

Hi, have not yet tried playback. Appreciate your points however everything you say would/should apply to all 3 connection tests I mentioned, however it is only showing between infuse and the nas.

And again, the Infuse built in speed test isn’t to find the max throughput, it’s got built in overhead.

I’d suggest you try the playback and see if it doesn’t work well. 95Mbps should play just about anything and changing to SMB 2 or Legacy as recommended in the users guide may give you higher result.

For sure will retest after the changes! I think some of my UHds have a higher than 100mbit bit rate which is my concern, but I could be misremembering

95 could be okay for some UHD, but to prevent buffering probably target 120+

Exactly my concern.

Did some test watches and while generally I am loving Infuse - solid interface, etc. - I loaded up BTTF II as it’s one the highest rated bitrate movies I have at 94.8mbit and I’ve already encountered a couple of glitches/freezes/loading pauses in only about 8 minutes of watching.

As mentioned, Infuse can pull from my Windows box at 2.5x this speed, and my windows box and the NAS are also communicating at roughly 2.5x this speed - but the NAS and Infuse seem stuck at 85-95mbit.

I believe that is because Infuse is not doing a regular file transfer and so its speed is different.

not sure i’m following - I’m doing the exact same process from Infuse in both cases… so it’s an apples to apples comparison…

Infuse Pro Speed Test against windows smb share: 250mbit/s

Infuse Pro Speed Test against synology smb share: 85-95mbit/s

Windows file copy against synology smb share: 250mbit/s

Well I hooked up a usb drive to my old tplink ax1800 router and shared that out… getting 300 mbits from that. So basically there seems to be some kind of weird issue specifically between Infuse and the synology NAS… every other combination of devices is significantly faster.

I’ll stick with the router for the time being - the NAS is ancient anyway. May keep an eye out for a deal on something newer eventually.

Thanks!

Actually, I’m a bit surprised. I would’ve thought that even with the ds215 you could get much faster read speeds that 250mbps. That is only about 30MB/s. Everything I’m reading online basically says your theoretical max speed is 3x that. So maybe there is something up with your NAS or with the drives? You could also try FTP, there is less overhead, just make sure you don’t share it since it is not secure.
