Infuse 8.4 upgrade cannot play videos anymore

I updated Infuse to 8.4/8.4.1 last week and I am no longer able to play videos and use the app on any of my Apple devices. Pretty much tried every possible fix but nothing works (see below). That’s super frustrating because I never had any issues like that before and my lifetime Infuse subscription is useless. The same videos play on Plex and VLC. Does anyone else experiences these issues? Haven’t heard back from tech support .

Summary of issues

After updating to Infuse 8.4.x, multiple playback issues appeared that were not present in earlier versions:

  • Some videos fail to play (open → immediately close)

  • Occasionally selecting one video opens a different video

  • Behavior is inconsistent and not tied to specific files

  • Issue persists across all access methods (SMB, WebDAV, Files mode)

Key observations

  • Same files play correctly in:

    • Plex

    • Infuse 8.2.7 (Mac)

  • MediaInfo shows no meaningful differences between working and non-working files

  • Issue affects newly added files more frequently, but not exclusively

Troubleshooting performed

  • Reinstalled Infuse (clean install)

  • Cleared and rebuilt library

  • Tested via:

    • SMB

    • WebDAV

    • Files mode (no library indexing

  • Verified files outside Infuse (Plex, Mac) → all play correctly

Results

  • Issue persists regardless of protocol or library usage

  • Files mode also fails → not a library indexing issue

  • Behavior suggests playback engine or file handling regression in 8.4.x

Additional notes

  • In some cases, selecting a video opens a different file → suggests possible indexing or mapping issue

  • Playback failures are immediate (no buffering), indicating possible decoder/init failure

Can you please replicate this issue and send in a diagnostic report from your device (and post the code here)?

If you’re seeing this with specific files it also could be helpful to send in a sample file we can test here to try and replicate the issue.

Hi James, how do you generate a specific log for the video in question? I am not receiving any error messages while trying to play these videos. The instructions you sent me ask for an email with description of the issue without specific extraction of data logs. Thanks for your help!

Right after you have a video display the problem you quit the video and follow the submitting diagnostics logs instruction when you click on that it will generate a 5 digit code that you will post here in the thread.

Thanks for the advice!

Hi James, I sent several logs via Report a problem and in this chat but have not received any response. The issue persists even if I download the files and try to play it. As I mentioned, these videos (1080p h.264) play just fine on Plex, VLC, and latest Versions of Infuse 8.3. Gemini says: You are likely dealing with a corrupted Metadata Database from the 8.3 to 8.4 migration. Since it’s happening on all devices, and if they all sync via iCloud, they may all be sharing a corrupted index.

Looks like the only fix is to enable a Legacy option to revert to 8.3 in your next app update. Other, I’ll have to give up on Infuse which is very unfortunate as it worked flawlessly until 8.4.

When you did this, did you delete what was in iCloud? Or at least turn off iCloud for the device you first performed the clean install?

Yes I did

I have the exact same issue. Since the latest version, I can no longer play certain video files which I was able to play before. Upon clicking the play button, infuse just exits to the Apple TV home screen. I tried the above mentioned troubleshooting steps (disable cloud sync, resinstall, etc) nothing worked.
Let me know if I can help with troubleshooting (sending the logs, video files etc)

Thanks for sharing this! After spending hours of troubleshooting and consulting ChatGPT, it suggested that “Infuse 8.4 introduced stricter or buggy parsing of MP4 containers”. Based on that, I found two temporary fixes:

  1. Open a video file using Subler app. Delete all metadata /poster so Infuse can’t find metadata info. Save the file as a new mp4 file + optimize video option and give it a random name. Copy into your library and try to play it. It works for some videos.

  2. If that doesn’t work, I downloaded mkvtoolnix, which converts the container from mp4 to mkv. This takes about 30 seconds and works for some videos.

I hope Infuse will fix this issue soon. As I mentioned earlier, these videos play just fine on Plex, VLC, and my MacBook that runs on Infuse 8.3.

Can you try installing the 8.4.2 update to see if this issue persists?

wow, that was quick

I can confirm, at least on my end the issue is fixed with the latest 8.4.2. update

Thank you.

Unfortunately, version 8.4.2 did not fix the issue I’m having with my videos. Endless buffering with black screen and normal audio. Looks like the only fix would be an option to choose your previous engine (8.3) in future updates. Otherwise my lifetime Infuse Pro subscriptions is useless.

Would you be able to send in a sample file so we can test here to try and replicate this issue?

Hi . Can you please Diagnostics: 3H1CW? Thanks

This would help
