Improve tappable area for seek bar

Hello dear developers,

I have been using Infuse for many years—on Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad.
I am more than willing to pay for software as long as I feel I am receiving appropriate value in return. I don’t mind investing a bit more if it means I can enjoy reliability and software that meets my expectations. Good software, however, is also defined by good support.

This has certainly been the case with Infuse—until now.

Since the release of version 8, I’m starting to have doubts about whether you are keeping your focus on the right priorities.
The new UI is visually appealing—modern and attractive—which I truly appreciate.
However, its usability is far from practical, at least in my opinion.

I would like to list a few points that I have mentioned before but that, unfortunately, seem to have gone unnoticed:

  • Graphic glitches in the playback bar:
For example, there are visual gaps or issues (see “img1” and “img2”). Could you please address this?

  • Poor usability of the playback bar:
It requires far too much precision to interact with the bar properly, making it difficult to scroll forward and backward efficiently. Adjusting the scrubbing speed is also cumbersome because it requires swiping upwards, which ends up obscuring the mini preview.

  • Missing on-screen display (OSD) for volume control:
I genuinely miss the OSD for volume adjustments via gestures. Please, please bring this back (see “img3”). While it works for brightness, it is missing for volume.

  • General playback controls:
In general, the playback controls are quite difficult to use. Buttons require very precise tapping to function correctly (see “img4”).

Could you please provide feedback on these points?
It’s very important to me that these concerns are heard. I may not be the only one who feels that the usability of version 8 has taken a step backward.

I look forward to your response and wish you a happy new year!

I 100% agree with all that was said and came onto these forums today to see if anyone else had the same thoughts. Boom, top post.

I can add that my family, especially my grand parents, have lots of problems using the new controls, because they require so much precision. But don’t take me wrong: It’s not just the older people in my family struggling. Me and other people in a young and middle age also have trouble with this.

Hello everyone,
Really, no response, dear developers?
How important are your paying users to you anyway?
I would have at least expected an acknowledgment!

@james Do you have any insights on a fix here? Since 8.0.0 the player UI became really hard to use and I’m hoping it’s not just us, who see it this way.

It would be super nice, if you could increase the tap targets for the player buttons and make the slider react on the entire surface of the slider, not just at the playback position.

@NC_Bullseye

Thank you for updating to 8.0.9 !
I don’t know if it was already in the pipeling but sadly I can’t observe any improvements
regarding my above mentioned issues.

Lately I fgured out, that the volume OSD appears only when there is no
bluetooth speaker (eg headphone) connected.
When watching via iPhone speakers the volume OSD will appear
when changing volume using swipe gestures - but not when, as mentioned,
there’s a bluetooth speaker connected (bug?).
Maybe this is helpful.

Looking forward to the next updates and keeping fingers crossed,
that my concers (and obviously other’s) will be heard.

Regards.

Would it be possible to get any acknowledgement on this issue? It feels really hard using the video player on iOS now :frowning:

Feeling like I’m stuck in I Am Legend
It’s a pity @james not getting at least any kind of support or even response by the staff!
In the meantime I really hate to use Infuse on iOS due to its crappy usability.

Thanks for your feedback.

We’ll be looking into these.

Thany you!

@james

Thank you for v8.1 !

All issues mentioned above are still existing!

Yep, confirming this. It‘s the same.

We are on 8.1.2 now - still the same!

Hello,

it’s been a year now.

Are there any news @james ?

Especially regarding this:
(see my initial post)

  1. Missing on-screen display (OSD) for volume control:
I genuinely miss the OSD for volume adjustments via gestures. Please, please bring this back (see “img3”). While it works for brightness, it is missing for volume.

    When headphones are connected

  2. General playback controls:
In general, the playback controls are quite difficult to use. Buttons require very precise tapping to function correctly (see “img4”).

It also would be great to have kind ob knob on playback bar like the one the volume control has - for much better usability. Sometimes it’s hard (when you have bad eyes) to detect how far the playback is when you try to scroll…

Any news appreciated.

I’m also still waiting for this to be improved. For me it’s especially important that the playback progress slider will be improved. Right now you only have a tiny area where you can start scrubbing from. Why not do the same as other sliders on iOS, where you can start dragging anywhere?

It’s sad to see how this UI has regressed over a year ago and still has not been fixed.

As a technical user I can deal with this, but my grandma just gave up on using this video player, due to this basic usability issue.

Please prioritize it. Me and my family would be super thankful and we would be eternal subscribers, if this was finally fixed!

I absolutely agree with you!
This is such a fundamental feature and should be an easy fix.

But apparently the priorities lie elsewhere and not with these kinds of “small” issues.
I find it very disappointing that it’s not even being addressed.

I’ve been using this app for a very long time and have always been satisfied, but lately I’m starting to wonder whether I should look for alternatives.

The number of bugs seems to be increasing recently, and when I look at the latest change logs, the so-called “improvements” feel rather marginal instead of actually addressing specific user suggestions.

The issue here is Apple has features that auto-adjust volume levels when using headphones and this would cause the volume overlay to appear at unexpected times during playback when you were not actually changing the volume yourself. We have not found a way to avoid this, so instead we only display the volume overlay when the volume is changed with the side buttons.

Can you elaborate on which controls you are seeing issues with? I don’t think we have seen many reports like this.

Is this the Personalize Volume setting? If so can you detect if it is enabled or not? I turned it off so that it doesn’t change the volume on me.

Thank you for the answer @james!

I see 2 issues on the iPhone and iPad versions of Infuse:

  1. The playback slider has a really tiny tap area from where you can initiate scrubbing the current playback time. You need to precisely hit the area. My family members often think the app is not working, because they cannot hit the slider properly. I’m also struggling. The suggestion here is to allow scrubbing from any point in the slider. Please compare how the Apple Music sliders for playback time work. This is also standard behavior for the native iOS video player, e.g. in the Apple TV app.
  2. The play, skip back and skip forward buttons have very small tap areas. The suggestion here is to make the tap area bigger, without making the buttons bigger visually.

Here’s a screenshot showing what I mean:

Both of these are regressions since the new UI shipped in 8.0.

@james
Thank you for your reply!

@kaiengelhardt mentioned everything I agree with!
Please enlarge tap areas a tiny bit and make them more visible / more “contrasty” (eg like in webplayer in Safari).

And please add additionally to that, kind of knob to playback bar (see volume slider top right).
This would make handling much easier.

A few improvements in this area are available in today’s 8.4.3 update.
