Seems like it’d be much easier to implement that than to continually tweak their own algorithm. Maybe just add it as a secondary option

Sure, or use libplacebo which is open source and has an excellent set of parameters the end user can adjust to taste if the default settings aren’t to ones liking. It can take into account the actual peak output of the display in its tone mapping, for example, so if I have a display that peaks at 100 nits, and you have one that peaks at 200 nits, the libplacebo algorithm can adjust its tone mapping to use that extra headroom for highlights instead of raising the brightness of the whole image. Etc.
